so today i was driving in a massive rain storm and i hit a couple patches of water big enough to where i couldnt see out my windshield with my wipers on full speed. After getting through the rainstorm i remembered a friend saying thats how he hydro locked his truck. So how much does it take to hydro lock a 3.0 4WD stock 4runner?

All it takes is for enough water to get sucked in through the air box for it to happen. Depending on were the air inlet on the air box is and how deep the water is, it can happen. you could always relocate the air box inlet to a diferent spot if your concerned about it happening to you.

yeah, prolly not gonna happen in a rain storm, ive done it before though but i sunk the front of my truck (including the intake) in a big muddy puddle.. started back up a few hours later and it drove fine for a long time after that.

To hydrolock, you'd have to submerged the intake sufficiently to pull water all the way up the intake, through the intake manifold, and into the cylinder. Hydrolock occurs when the cylinder is sufficiently filled to prevent a piston compressing on the power stroke. This can result in bent rods & blown head gasket. Usually, someone sucks in enough water to kill the engine & it goes no further.

The problem begins when they kill the engine & DON'T REMOVED THE INTAKE to get it out. You have to really be trying to get water than far into an engine. If you EVER pull water into the intake, it very prudent to removed the intake hose up to the TB & inspect for evidence of (& remove all) water. It's not very good for your VAFM, either~

this little hit on the watter hydrolocked this engine. I know this for a fact. Engine was fine after removing plugs and turning the engine over to get the water out.
