How many pedal pumps does it take to start your 22R?

Just curious. Mine was two pumps for cold starts on regular mornings and 3 or 4 pumps when sub freezing. Religiously. Now after rebuilding my carb last week it's all over the place. Two pumps in the morning sometimes works, other times it floods it, other times it's not enough. It always starts, it's just tricky now.

Maybe that's the nature of a 22R? Maybe I screwed up the carb job? Maybe there's a break in period?

How's yours?

takes me 1 pump to fire on a medium cold morning and on a very cold freezing morning 2 or 3. I rebuilt mine a few years back. One issue I am dealing with is after driving around for about 20 min I then shut off the rig and do whatever I am doing. After about 10 minutes I get back in to start it and it takes quiet a few cranks to get it to fire. Like it is flooded or not getting enough gas. SO weird and sometimes frustrating.

Sounds like a choke issue? I've heard of this being common with our rigs... I bet someone on here has a fix.

Initially I thought it was a float issue so I adjusted it to spec. Didn't seem to help. If it is the choke that would be interesting.

Okay, I've been playing around with it since the rebuild and think I've figured it out. I need to adjust my choke. Or do I?

It used to take two pumps to start in the mornings, now I am down to 0 and it fires right up. Or I hold the pedal halfway in while turning the ignition and it just fires right up. If I pump the pedal twice now, it pretty much floods it.

I just set it to factory specs. Should I readjust the choke so it goes back to two pumps when cold (like the manual states) or enjoy not having to pump my pedal anymore lol. Does it matter?

Thx for the advice, still very new to toyotas and carbs.

2 cold. 0 warm. Factory specs never hurt. Its not too much trouble to pump the pedal is it? Haha

Okay, now what are we calling "cold". Weather or how long the engine's been sitting. If I leave my truck overnight and get to it in the morning it's usually around 50 degrees out these days. Still doesn't need any pumps.

When you say 2 cold, do you mean cold as in sitting overnight or cold as in cold weather (below 40ish)?

Have no way of checking how my rig's acting in cold weather as it's warmed up now... Anyhow, I'm now set to factory spec. I'd have to tweak and adjust the choke to get her back to 2 pumps at cold start...

Yours sounds normal, anyway =)

Cold start as in sitting overnight. Probably above freezing, otherwise regarless of ambient temperature.

0 if above about 40°, 2 or 3 if its between 20-40, and the mornings it is like -15°-20° i just pump while im crankin till she fires it gets chilly here in pennsylvania haha

Haha. How do you have your choke tuned? Maybe I'll see about adjusting mine.

I think the coil is set at 19-23 ohms.
