How long did your tranny whine/hum until it died?

I got my pickup 2 years ago (90,22re,w56) and the tranny always had that little hum in it. Since then i have put 20K on it. Not until last monday on the way home from work, i got the 5th gear whine. It was louder than usual, but not like HOLY S*&T loud. I got home checked the oil, it was low. I drained it and got maybe a quart. So i filled it back up with thicker oil 85 140 and everything seems fine. I put about 120 miles on it already. Honestly I think its quieter now than before.

So how long did yours last??

On another note, I do have a spare tranny (g52 w/ t-case), ive been searching and seems it will bolt up, but the shifter is in different location? Foward a few inches? Both are foward t-cases. Is that the only difference other than beaing weaker?

Thanks in advanced.

My 1990 4x4 pickup whined in 3rd and 5th gear when I bought it in 1999. I drove it until 2004 before I actually had to change out the tranny. I'm not sure how many miles, but I was daily driving it all that time.

I bought my '85 (W56) 4Runner with 203k miles and bearing noise in every gear but 4th. After a while, I put new gear oil in it and it quieted down quite a bit for a while, then it got noisy again...then when I was doing 80 on the freeway in 5th, it got noisier and noisier and then...not so noisy. After slowing down and making a few shifts, I realized that it was nearly impossible to get it into 4th, and in neutral with the input shaft spinning it made some nasty rattling. I just pulled the transmission out at about 217k miles. I got 2 years out of it.

Now I'm trying to decide whether to try rebuilding it, or find another transmission that is still good.

Can I use a G52 or G54? What are the drawbacks? Would I be able to use the same driveshafts?

Can I use a W56 from any year?

Do the 22RE IFS trucks have the same t-case as my '85?

Put some synthetic 75-90 (Lucus or other) oil in it. It will prolong it but it will still keep getting worse until it starts poping out of gear. They will run like that for a long time though so do not worry.

You can put the G52 and case in (wait till the W dies though) with no problem except for the speedo (mech to electric, maybe) and the shifter will be moved a few inches. You will have to cut the floor a bit but no other issues.

People say that the G52s are no good but I have about 50/50 luck with W56's and G52's. I think I have a pair of each in the back yard with blown input bearings.

I ran my old 86 runner for over 30000 miles between the whine (first through fourth) and the rattle whine (fifth). Then one day without warning there was a loud metallic bang and then no more go. When I drained the fluid afterward it looked like mercury. Oh, these miles included many off road and many highway miles.

Probably worn out shifter bushings which is probably the case. there are several threads on it here about that. If you buy some buy the ones on Marlin Crawlers website. You will find them by searching.

I've got to try the shifter bushing thing. So far I've read nothing but positive things about doing it. It's cheap, it's easy.... so it's all good.

My tranny has been starting to do some strange things. I too just checked my oil recently and it looks like 'mercury'. So I'm going to try the bushings and oil and hope for the best for a while.

I'm not sure what you mean by the whining though. The only time I notice any noise like that is going downhill with the foot off the gas. I always thought that was u joints though.

I think most toyota transmissions whine to a certain degree even if they are good. That said, I lost 5th gear in an old 86 I had and drove it around for 2-3 months just using 4th for a high gear until it stopped moving entirely one day. It had 220K original miles when it finally died.
