Getting ready to tear into my 22re because i got it pretty hot a few weeks ago when on of the coolant lines came off. Since then it has been using about a 1 quart of coolant every 500 miles and i couldnt get air out of the system. The front and 2nd to the back spark plugs were clean unlike the other 2 also. So i did a test for exhaust gasses in the coolant and it has a leak. So im going to start in the next few days taking it apart and putting a head gasket in it. I was wondering how often 22re heads crack or warp though so i know how much this might cost. I had the needle just touching the red. So who has overheated their 22re and what was the damage?

I would say they don't, not on their own. Only when they are subject to out-of-limits stress.

I did it to my 22R. I was sitting in the Jack In The Box drive thru. I think it was because of a faulty fan clutch.

Oh man, it's been like 20 years or more, so I'm going off waaay old memory. From what I remember the head was inspected and/or shaved and a new gasket. Besides an oil change. I don't believe anything was done to the valves while the head was already off.

I remember getting home from the over heated incident, and pulling my spark plugs, then cranking the engine and see jets of water shooting out from the opened hood.

if anyone was wondering my head was warped and cracked and i have a new one ordered. Should be here monday.
