How to drop oil pan on 1994 4Runner?

Please,

Can someone tell me how to get the last two bolts off the oil pan on the rear (transmission side) of my 1994 3.0L 2WD Toyota 4Runner? What is required? My son and I are trying to change the oil pan gasket due to a leak. Thanks in advance.

on mine the reason i couldnt get to the bolts was that there is a shield or something bolted to the tranny. To get it off you have to take off two brackets that go from the block to the tranny.

They are called stiffener plates and can be removed to get to the oil pan bolts. The job of the brackets is to help support the lower part of the transmission when driving, but can be removed temporarily and then reinstalled after you're done with the oil pan.

Yes, I saw the two brackets and can take them off. Does the dust shield on the transmission then come off and allow access to those bolts? And, upon unbolting all screws on the oil plan, will it drop down? Or, does the engine need to be jacked up or some of the suspension rods moved/removed? Thanks.

Thanks for the info! After unbolting all of the screws (and nuts) on the oil pan on a '94
4Runner, will the oil pan then drop down without having to raise the engine or move/remove some of the suspension rods? Thanks.

What exactly are we talking about here?
I can drop the pan on my 91 2wd truck without doing anything to the transmission, as can I drop the pan on my 88 4Runner.

Anyone have pictures of what we're supposed to be looking at?

Trying to remove the oil pan on a 1994 Toyota 4Runner 2WD to change the gasket. Some have already informed me about the two brackets holding the trans flywheel dust cover and that they also provide stiffening function. Would like to know before proceeding if it will be required that the suspension rods crossing over the front of the oil pan will need to be moved and if the engine has to be jacked up to let the oil pan come down AFTER that. Or, does it drop down without further action. Thanks in advance.

I have a 1993 2wd 4runner 3.0 that I'm also trying to lower the oil pan to look at tha rod bearings(have a knocking sound in the lower end). I just got the pan to drop down but can get it down low enough I believe is the oil pick is in the way. I'm not sure of my next move.
Looks like the linkages to the tie rods, idler are in the way? I have mine up on ramps to work under it. I may try to put it on jack stands to see if this will help to lower the pan. Let me know what you come up with.

Robb- unbolt the idler arm from the passenger side frame rail (3 bolts and nuts through the frame, opposite the steering box) and that should allow the relay rod (steering linkage from one side to the other) to drop enough to get the oil pan out.

Thanks Abecedarian
If the main or rod bearing are shot I may pick your brain on a good rebuilt engine.I picked up the 4runner as a project for my daughter(16). We bought it knowing that the enging might be toast form a shop putting the wrong oil filter on it and the previous owner returning to the shop 3 qts low. the rest of the 4runner is in really good shape(paint,no rust, new tires, rebuilt tranny(auto).A friend sugested to check the rod bearings before I try to put a new engine in it.

Robb,

Thanks. Finally found a source with connection to ALLDATA and they told me the stiffner plates have to be removed and then the oil pan will drop down.

Doug,
I had to removed the stiffner plates just to be able to reach two of the back pan bolts. That didn't allow me to drop the pan though. I don't have my 4runner on jack stands but up on ramps. I wonder if putting jacks under the frame would help to give me a little more clearance some how? I did have to remove one side of the steering stabilizer shock to reach one of the pan bolts. I'm going to try Abecedrian's advice on the idler arm.

For what's worth I did get my oil pan off finally.I put my 4runner on jack stands, it was on ramps before. I believe I read somewhere here to turn the wheels al the way to the right. Well, I tried it and I was easily able to lower the pan.I'll will have a mech friend help my look at the rod bearings Tues. By the way I did find what looked like aluminum shavings on the bottem of the pan, does't look to good so far for this engine.
