Seeing a lot of deflection in my shift levers ... hoping a motor mount isn't broke, cuz I imagine it's an incredible PITA to fix with a 3.0 ...

So how do you KNOW a motor mount is broken - how do you test it?

And if it's bad, how do you replace it? PLEASE say you don't have separate the transmission!

I just busted my driver's side mount. The top tore off, and let the engine shift rearward enough that was easy to tell that something was not right when I was under there to check my brake pads.

It would be pretty simple to tell a busted one by lifting up on the engine and seeing if the thing is still in one peice. Maybe a prybar in the right spot, or put a wood block under the oil pan and jack it up an inch or 2. (Cherry-picker to lift it from the top would be better, if available.) If the other is still good, just the bad side will lift while the other flexes a bit.

There should be enough lift space to replace one side without unbolting anything else anything else. I can't verify that, mine there was more than enough (3" body lift).

its a two person job. put the ebrake on as much as possible without breaking it, put the tranny in reverse, and drive backwards. it wont move much, but the motor will start shaking way more than it should

Easy to test, bottle or floor jack and a block of wood is all you need. Lift up under the oil pan and watch the engine and frame move as you do. If a broken mount, you'll see the frame stop lifting at some point but the engine keep rising. Should be able to see one mount separate if it is torn, since it is usually the rubber inside the two halves the rips free:

this is the right and safe way, do it like this ^^^^^^

just get a pry bar and pick up onthe motor. if it moves more than your common sense tells you it should and you can see cracks in the rubber than its bad and they arent expensive to change or difficult.

The way the mounts are built, you'll never be able to tell one is broken just by looking. Why? The top of the mount is a steel cap that covers the rubber part entirely. When the mount fails, it separates from the steel but the cap holds things in place.



That is why I like the bottle jack technique, you lift up on the engine and if it pulls away from the frame, you know where the problem is.

And a chain around the mount is the best insurance to prevent future breakage:

Gotcha - would have tried that tonight, but, well, the truck was in the driveway and the car was in the garage and wasn't motivated to do the car hokey-pokey to check it ... plus I'm gonna have to take the skidplate off I think, so need to have plenty of time ...

My 82 mounts are sooooo toast. I can see all the rubber, its fresh black, it isnt mud like the rest. I can make the tranny/tcase do circles, I did one too far and bent the floor with the shifter. I didnt do this on purpose, i was sticking the t case back in.

though I've heard the NVH factor is pretty high with these things....

Do you have your motor mounts chained after going to dual cases? If not, you probably have torn a mount. Check it via the 4crawler method and if you have to replace it, I'd suggest chaining them down. It really helps the driveline not move around so much while in double low.

While RS is prolly mopre expensive, with shippingfrom the other, it might end up being the same price for us since we live in Scott's back yard!

Maybe if TC would stop letting girls drive his truck he wouldnt be breaking motor mounts!
