How do you guys fill your manual transmissions?

The way the exhaust goes right by the fill hole on the manual tranny it makes it impossible just to top it off with the gear oil bottle.

I've tried two ways: First I bought a suction pump and that worked great for half the fill up, then it broke because the oil was too thick for it to handle. It was also very messy.

Next I bought around 2 feet of plastic hose from the hardware store and used JB Weld to glue it to the gear oil cap. Works great except after a few top offs (my transmission leaks) it'll break loose and I have to buy a new bottle of gear oil and a new tube to glue on it.

I did some searching on this and didn't come up with anything. Thought I remembered reading somewhere on here that it's actually possible to top it off by taking the shift lever off?

Any input on different experiences would be great. This is on the 3.0 V6 4x4 btw.

I have had good luck with a cheap ($5) STA-lube bottle top dispensing pump-
3-4 years of use and still going-
http://automotive.hardwarestore.com/...p--648771.aspx

They may not fit your particular brand gear oil bottles-
Just find a bottle that fits & refil & pump from it.

You could also recycle the hand pump from a large Wholesale Club sized soap/shampoo bottle.

I used one of those big syringe things I got at AutoZone. Suck the fluid in from the bottle and shoot it back out into the tranny. It takes a bit but it works like a charm.

by $2 home made pump worked great, even better than the ones from the autoparts stores.

go to any 99cents store, buy a squeeze bottle, go get 2 feet of their clear 1/4"ID water tube, about $0.40/ft. cut the nozzle of the squeeze bottle little by little, pull the tube through from the inside to the out side, key is it has to be a tight fit. leave enough tube inside the bottle all the way to the buttom.

i like the squeeze bottle siphon pump because it's one hand operation. very easy to control the volume.

For as often as you have to do it I just take the shifter off and pour it in.

I use one of the pump jobbies or take off the shifter.

Mine is leaking like a freaking sieve - gotta get it fixed.

torque down the drain plug.

take out the fill plug. take out the shift lever.

I fill through the shift lever until i've put in 2 quarts, after I have have someone pour the rest in while i get underneath and tell them to stop when it starts to come out through the fill hole.

follow that?

Thanks for all the ideas! I'm going to try taking the shifter off.
Mine has the rubber boot on it and carpet in there.. hopefully it'll come loose without too much trouble as I've never taken it off before

I hooked up clear plastic tubing to the nozzle of the bottle and ran it down from the engine bay to the fill hole. Found a spot to rest the bottle upside down in the engine bay, in the sun and let gravity work. After a couple minutes, I punched a hole in the bottle to let the pressure equalize 1. Sun heat to get the oil moving made it much easier than when cold. 2. the tubing kept wanting to come off the end of the bottle so that was a pain in the ass.

I've done it 2 ways not mentioned so far.

#1
Cost $10-15
Got one of those pump up pesticide sprayers (new+empty) and poured all the gear oil into that. The nozzle fits into tight places well, just pump it up and go!. Not really the best for storing the oil in, it found water(condensation) got into the pump and it's really just easier to empty the oil out into the original bottle when your done for storage. Also it is usually faster if you take the nozzle off the end so it's not trying to atomize the gear oil

Those boat gas tank pump ball primer things

a piece of clear fuel line on both sides, one into the gear oil bottle and one into the part you are filling. It's a little slow compared to the pump sprayer, those things are made for gas not gear oil, but it works great.

I use either the StaLube in-bottle pump or through the shifter base. One tip, make sure the gear oil is warm when you get ready to use the pump.

those outboard hand pump primers/emergency fuel siphon pumps are terrible. Tried one once, and ended up spending an hour laying under my truck squeezing the handle to get the trans full.

1000x easier to just pop out the shifter. once you've done it once it only takes 5 minutes.

pull the fill plug, and put something under to catch the overflow, and then just pour away. after you've done it a once you can easily repeat and do it in less than a half hour, and have everything cleaned up.

Shoot thats a given if you want all the mess suspended in the oil instead of the oil draining and all the sediment of various types laying in there for the new oil to break loose and circulate
