How do you check a tranny and transfer case when buying used if they are on the ground not in the truck?

I have a chance to pickup a R151f and front shift transfer case from a turbo pickup.

I have a 94 with a front shift transfer case and w56.

Im guessing you just shift through all gears and make sure they turn smoothly without any noises or binding. It should spin progressively faster through the other gears. Make sure you try out the transfer case as well. This, i think, should give you an idea of the condition. Do you know how many miles were on it?

Trust your gut. If you don't trust the seller pass.

Just my notes when I buy. If stored outside on the ground pass. On a pallet covered is more like it. Check the fluid to see if it is burnt. Shift the gears and check the outputs inputs. General overall appearance. History. Why is it for sale? What vehicle did it come out of? If they are not sure what it is you best be damn sure you can tell for yourself. Again, I trust my instincts and if my wabbit sense goes off I pass.

Lots of folks will lie and rip you off without thinking twice about it. Pay with a credit card if you can or use PayPal. Gives you a receipt and recourse.

Always go see it in person if you can or get pics. If they won't send pics or sketchy pics, pass.

Use your common sense and you will do fine.

They are at a salvage yard still in the truck outside.
