How do you check the fan clutch?

Can someone please tell me how to check my fan clutch to make sure its ok. I have been running hot the last few days. I replaced the thermostat and burped the system after a flush and refill. I just bought the truck so I am not sure how loud the fan should be when its fully engaged.

with the engine warmed up and turned off, try to spin the fan by hand: grab a fan blade and try to spin it. It should spin less than 1/4 turn or so before coming to a stop after you release the fan blade. If it spins more than that it's bad.

probably.
Mine won't spin 1/2 turn when the engine is cold (~70F). Which, ironically, might mean mine is bad too since it should freewheel a bit when cold.

I gotta go check mine out, I've been chasing a squeel that I cant seem to locate.
Anyone know if a bad clutch fan squeels?

Only if it's a paid informant... It's most likely one of the idler pulleys for the timing belt, or the bearing behind the fan clutch.

Mines a 22re so no t-belt. I guess I'm going to start with the tensioner a the top since it looks easiest.
