Does it overheat quickly? Or is it a slow warm up to overheating? I know you just replaced the thermostat, but I would take it out and see what happens...its free and might tell you more about your situation...if you suspect the heater core...disconnect /bypass it....isolate your issues pretty quick....just throwing ideas out...(free ones)

Is it an auto? I had a 94 4Runner with auto that occasionally would overheat, usually during a long road trip when I had been driving for a few hours straight. Stop and raise the hood for about 10 min, and I was good to go. PITA, though.

it probably takes about 10 min to overheat at idle. I checked the new thermostat and the old one and the both work but the old one opens at a lower temp so i put it back in and it is still overheating. I also bypassed the whole heating system and it is still heating up so i have a feeling that it is something that is internal

I would remove the stat all together and see how it go's. I mean it really sounds like your system isn't handling the heat. Maybe you got a hose being pinched or that radiator is faulty. Possibly you got something blocking it that wasn't when it was fixed? Have you verified if the water pump is pumping the right amount of water?

So I think that there might be a possibility that the head gasket was put on wrong so me and my dad are going to take one of the heads off to check the gasket and the main reason that we think it has to do with the head gasket is because the case is nice and cool and the heads are really hot so we have a feeling that there isn't any water getting to the heads so I'm kinda to the point that I'm hoping its the gasket so we can get it replaced and get her running. I'm just gonna pray that this works!!

I think we figured out why it is overheating so my dad took the engine apart when I was at school and the head gaskets got mixed up and were put with the wrong heads so the water jets were clogged so the heads weren't getting any circulation. So we are going to replace the head gasket one more time, and while everything is off we are going to replace some old heater hoses.

yeah I think we should be good cause it wasn't ever really driven with the way it was and everything was all good when we put the gasket kit on the first time so it should still be good.
