How to Change VSS?
hi,
i have 1990 P/U 4WD v6 that is showing a 42 error code. according to the book this is the #1 vehicle speed sensor.
from what i can see the VSS is easy to get at. can anyone tell me what is involved in replacing it?
i've attached a photo of what i believe is the VSS. correct?
once i unbolt it how are the wires removed?
thank so much.

I'm pretty sure that's not the vss. It looks alot like the speedometer cable to me.
The vss should be inside the combination meter(speedometer/odometer/vehicle speed sensor) in the dash.
Not easy or cheap to replace. It requires removing the steering wheel, the entire dash/console, and then removing the combination meter with the vss. The entire combination meter must be replaced as a unit, the vss is integral and can't be serviced or replaced by itself. The combination meter costs around $125-$150 new, and is a dealer item(only Toyota makes 'em).
Good luck!
