How can I do an "in driveway" 4wd check?

What would be a good “in the driveway” or “in the garage way to test out if my 4wd is engaged? On my new red truck one of the hubs is impossible to turn, so I took one off the totaled white truck and cleaned it up and put some white lithium in it, now its turns like butter, but I want to make sure when I put the assembly on the truck it works right.

lock in the hubs and see if you can turn the drive shaft while in 4wd.

Or you can jack up the front end. lock the hubs and spin the drive shaft, the tires should move if its working.

Do it one step at a time.

Start with everything unlocked (2wd) Truck on the ground

Lock your Tcase in 4hi
The forward driveshaft should be locked solid
Unlock (2hi)
The shaft should turn freely

Lock the left hub
Left half-shaft (between the diff and left wheel) should be locked solid
Unlock hub
Half-shaft should move freely

Lock the right hub
Right half-shaft should be locked solid
Unlock hub
Half-shaft should move freely

If you do this you will know that all of the components function properly individually. If you lock it in 4-hi or lo with hubs in none of the shafts should turn freely.

Once you have the truck driving you can do a test. Put the truck in 4wd on dry pavement and crank the wheel all of the way to one side. Start pulling gently forward and the truck should bind up and stop rolling. Dont push it any farther than it will roll!! That can damage the drive-train. If it does not bind up you know something is not locking correctly. Pop the truck in reverse to un-wind the binding. Pop it back into 2hi.

id just put it up on jack stands, (all 4 wheels off the ground) and start it, put it in 4x4, lock the hubs, put it in first, then let off the clutch. (or drive, if its an auto). a tire on the front and a tire on the back should spin. if not, then u got a problem. at least, thats the way i understand it.. someone correct me if im wrong.
