how big a deal is it?
i found a 94 runner in a junk yard.. the truck has been there 2 days i already started pulling parts lol so i need to regear i spun the drive shaft and wheel and have com up with
in 10 turns of the drive shaft the wheel turns about 2.2x
that being said i have come up with 4.88 gears
my question is the truck has BOTH wheels off the ground. will that change the figures at all ?

How'd you get 4.88, 10 divided by 2.2 = 4.55, so I would guess 4.56 gears.
And no, having both wheels of the ground is not a problem. If one wheel was on the ground you'd have to spin the drivesahft 20 times to get 2.2 on the wheel.

umm yeah thats what i meant lol ok wishful thinking on my part anyway so having both wheels in the air doesnt matter cool so woohooo for me im gettin new thirds! $48.75 per third ill recheckafter i pull the rear wish me luck that they are 488 instead of 456 i did a quick check so when i yank ill recount! i looked up the front diff out of the FSM looks pretty easy any real problems i should worry about? special tools? i will be in a junk yard so i have to bring what i need

Front diff is a pain in the butt!
An impact helps TONS, but since you are doing it at the yard, bring lots of ratches and extensons.
I belive most of the bolts are 17mm.
Loosen the main mounts, unbolt cv joints. Remove main mount bolts, wrassle that sucker out. Its pretty difficult without removing a cv. But it can be done.
when you go to install, pound out the Studs then put them back in when you have the diff in place. Makes it 100x easier.

lol oh i totaly plan on doin the cv stud change while im under there! the FSM is pretty clear however ! once your crammed under the truck in a tight spot things tend to .........

I didnt actually do the CV stud mod ( drilling out the cv holes or grinding off the splines). Make sure you got somthing comfortable to lay on, its gonna take you awhile. A second set of hands it very nice!

The rear pinion bearing is offset, this you cannot regear a factory 4.88 third to anything but factory toyota 4.88 gears. But it will work in your truck, thats what im running

I think he actually found 4.56 diffs, which have the normal pinion offset and are regearable.
If indeed they are the factory 4.88's, they will work fine in your axle housing, but if you ever want (or need, due to damage) to regear, you're stuck.
Sway ... having pulled the diffs from a Cleveland truck myself, I can tell you, it's gonna be a MAJOR PITA.
I could not get the rubber isolated "mount" bolts to budge. Not even with like 3 feet of cheater. I ended up having to remove the two bolts in each mount that are on top. Even that took like 18" of cheater, and the WHOLE way out.
If the yard will take them out for you for a reasonable price, I would take that option!

lol thanks TC for the info im thinking im gonna bring some air my brother in law has a gas powered compressor so it might tag along with us
and yeah i know the 488 are not interchangable but im sticking with 31s and i figure 488 will give me the extra i should have had factory
and the old cases will get 529s for bob in oberlin for when and if i go 33s or 285s

What gear ratio do you have right now? I know the 3rd gens had 4.30's available and most were 4.10. It seems really odd from everyone I've talked to that you don't already have the 4.88's.
