Horn wiring problem
Hey,
I want to thank anyone who answers ahead of time.
I have an 85 4x4 Pickup. When I bought it the truck had one of those stupid tiny Autozone steering wheels. A tiny wheel without power steering is a big PIA.
I found a nice inexpensive wheel on E-bay, it was labeled as an 85 wheel, but it is actually an 87 wheel. The horn on my truck is supposed to be activated by pushing the center of the wheel that pushes a ring and actuates the horn. The wheel I bought has a button on each spoke that sounds the horn.
I installed the new wheel and found the wiring for the horn, only one wire, very simple. The problem is the way the wire comes out of the steering wheel on an 87, there is one hole for it on the back and the wire feeds out of it and connects to the wire under the column. When I tun the wheel it twists the wire around the column. I knew this would be an issue, but left a foot of wire to try and compensate for the turning of the wheel. Now it wraps around the column and eventually gets tangled.
The PO did wire a ooga horn after taking off the old wheel, it is just really difficult to reach when I need to use it in a hurry and sounds really stupid.
If someone has a picture of how the wiring is connected from the wheel to the wire on the column on an 87 I would really appreciate it. Suggestions would help too.
Thanks again.
Avery.

I think your missing some parts.
It has been a while but if I remember correct the wire comes up and plugs into the spring loaded piece that rides on the contact .
There should be no wire to get wrapped around.
When it gets light I can pull a steering wheel off and look.

Thanks for your reply Wyoming.
The little spring piece is what the horn wire coming from the wiring harness was plugged into. I have that but, I could not get the horn to work while the wire was attached to that piece. So I disconnected the wire from that pin and ran it to the wires coming from the horn switch on my steering wheel. I do not see how the wire from the back of the 87 wheel connects to the wire coming from the harness without getting twisted around the wheel.
I will take some pics tomorrow and upload them to make it easier to understand my issue.
Is your truck an 87 Wyoming?
I really hope this is not a lost cause.
Thanks for taking the time to check for me.

There has to be a connection from the buttons to the contact plate it is the only way it will work.
In your case is it missing or just corroded?
There is no way Toyota Would have wires being twisted around the column as the wheel is turned .
I have a few I know a couple are 87 I most likely have the missing parts as well.
It is not a lost cause more like something simple.

I knew that the wire twisting around the wheel had to be wrong. Maybe that how Jeep does it, but Toyota has standards.
I just really hoped it would work for the time being. And I was dead wrong.
Does the contact plate on an 87 have a place for the wire from the wheel to connect to? Then I could see how it could complete the circuit to sound the horn. I really hope I can find that contact plate somewhere.

Refreshing my mind by looking .
There is a harness connecting the 2 push buttons on the steering wheel .
This connects to a male spade connector on the brass ring contact plate.
Which is on the bottom side of the steering wheel .
In the combination switch there is a spring loaded brass pin that makes the connection to the brass ring contact plate.
This is connected to the harness coming out the combination switch
When you press the buttons this completes the circuit by allowing it to ground.
What if anything are you missing ??
I hope this helps
If any of the connections are corroded it won`t work.
