High Idle - Throttle Body?

High Idle - Throttle Body?
Hey, my 86 4WD Jeep is idling high, sometimes as high as 2500, seems to depend on how far I wind it out, for example, if on the freeway taching out, once in town, when out of gear waiting at a light for example, I'll be idling at 2000-2500. But, if from a dead start, it may not idle high at all or only as high as 1500. I don't know if that variation would signal anything specific or not.
Anyways, I've looked around and I guess it could be a number of things, though throttle body seems the most likely. But I popped it open and it looks clean, so I don't know if that is the problem or not.
Any ideas? Thanks

Yo Bro I think you may be on the wrong site. But on a side note have you thought about getting a repair manual ? If you search around there is a site that is JEEP SPECIFIC. On your jeep it has a CPS ( CRANK POSITION SSENSOR ) or a least my freinds does , and when that starts to go it gets ugly. It is located on the tranny top of the bell housing driver side. Good luck and keep searching you'll track it down.

I was forced to drive a jeep cherokee a couple of days last week...UGG! My wife didn't find it amusing when I told her "I got the jeep thing and now it burns when I pee!"

I have a Heep aslo the cherokea 4.0 HO . I dont like how cheap they are inside but it has a nice coil over front end and that 4.0 tears it up. I have 33x10.5 on and it will smoke them intill I let off. It is a capable machine. I would take my
92 Yota Xtra cab with the little 22re over it. But a cheap heep makes for a great beater.

Sorry these guys couldn't be more help, anyname. This is the wrong site to ask the question..
However, my old YJ used to do the same thing. I'm not sure what the name of the part is, but the "hinge" type thing that connected the throttle cable to the front of the throttle body had come loose / worn out so that it would not release straight. I didn't see a good way to fix it. So I put an extra spring to the top of the hinge to pull it tighter. It made the throttle pedal a little tighter, but it lowered the idle.
Also a different time it was idling high (again, I don't know the name of the part) but the metal plate inside the throttle body was stuck more open than it should have been. I got rid of the jeep before I got a chance to fix it. Maybe just a whole new throttle body (but this is not a guaranteed fix).
