high idle on my way to work.
Well when I got to work my turcks idle didnt go down under 2 grand. Its a 87 4runner 22r 5 speed.
Kinda worried as i have not had one problem with the truck since I got it.
I will check for vacume leaks, stuck buterfly on TB, Linkage isues, and idle screw.
Any other ideas cuz I have one hour at luch to figure this out. Id like to get out there and get strait to the problem and fix it I carry all my tools in my car so yes I have tools.

Here's a few things to consider. Was it exceptionally cold today and is your commute a short one? Might not have had enough time for the truck to warm up on the way to work. Other things it could be include but are not limited to the IACV, sticking throttle, T-stat stuck open and the truck never really warmed up among many other things but go ahead and check your coolant level and if the answer is the commute is short and it was really cold for houston today your truck just might be acting normal for you just not what your used to.

Well it was cold today but it was colder yesterday.
My commute is about 30 min and I know it was warm enough as i moniter my gauges always.
I mean its just weird because it never misbehaves and i keep up with it always I hope its an easy fix

Check the rubber elbow between the throtle body and intake tube. It can get brittle and a hair line crack will let unmettered air in and act like a vacuume leak.

Well luch is over i think i found the problem but no solution as of yet
The linkage is sticking
If i tap the gasin a way that it will insure a retracting movement in the linkage the idle goes back down to normal and stays there until the gas pedal is pressed again.
I got out and did it manualy and the same happened so the linkage is sticking hopefuly some WD will do the trick and i can salvage what i have instead swaping
If any body has any ideas as i sit at work and ponder about fixing this let me know.

maybe one of the wires are frayed in the cable. In that case WD40 might not do the trick. I should know I have that problem on mine. Id' say the cable is too tight, but since it just started doing that well... Also your return spring on the carb might be starting to wear out like mine has. A supplemental return spring can help if that is the case.
Back to the cable too tight, my weber was doing a similar thing as well, sticking me at 1000 RPM. What was happening because the cable was too tight was the cable was jumping itself and getting stuck on one of those notches in the linkage on the carb. Loosening the cable has so far rectified my problem.
It can also be a "sticking" choke. As punching or tapping on the throttle will take it off the high idle cam. This can act a little funny if in between temps. In that one press of the throttle will take you off that high idle cam and put you at regular throttle setting and your next press can put you right back on the high idle.
2,000 RPM sounds about right when your on the high idle cam. Check you wire connections on the choke and on the green connector of the associated wiring and make sure they are good as the choke might not be getting steady power.

Sorry mine is fuel injected oops sorry I just always say 22r ...
I will check the cable and i think it is the spring that is not retracting as it should.
I will also check all conections once i get home and get in the garage.

XXX, Doesnt matter if he says 22r because no '86-'89 4runners came with the 22r, only the 22re. Special order was probably optional, but I have not heard of that just sayin....

Ok so just to close the tread out or for future referance i fixed the problem
The linkage was sticking and was not retracting all the way due to dirty linkage and build up... i took the parts off cleaned them and oiled them real nice and it fixed my problem
