Hello-
I have a little problem: My '88 22RE manual idles normally until warmed up fully. Then it will idle extremely high (not sure of the RPMs, I don't have a tach). I can "slow down" the idle by pressing the brake and letting out the clutch just until before it moves, then it will go back to normal. Also, when warm, I can take my foot off the gas when moving and it will keep going as if I have cruise control (until I apply the brake, of course). Another thing (this may be unrelated): until warm, the engine "hesatates" when accelerating. I have asked a couple of people about these and they suggested a vaccum leak. How do I check for a vaccum leak? Where are the vaccum lines? Is there anything else that may be the problem? Any help would be great! Thanks!

It sounds like your throttle cable is getting stuck. After warming up, does the idle raise on its own, or just when you apply some gas? If you want to check for vacuum leaks, while idling spray some starting fluid around the intake, throttle body, gaskets, etc and see if it affects the idle. There are plenty of vacuum hoses. Basically, all the skinny hoses in the bay are for vacuum. Check for cracks, or maybe one came disconnected.

I think it goes up just on its own. I checked the throttle cable and it seems to be fine. I sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner around the throttle body. If it were the throttle cable, how would a warmed up engine affect it? Thanks for the advice on checking for vaccum leaks, that is the most thourough explaination I've gotten. I needed that. I'll check it later this afternoon. Thanks

An afterthought....It does seem like the throttle cable could be stuck. Once I get the idle low at a light, it stays that way until, after accelerating again, I push in the clutch either to shift or stop. Does that make sense?

Sounds like the dashpot is sticking, which is common with those things as they age. The dashpot is the brass valve right under the throttle cable. It is designed the return the throttle slowly to the rest position which reduces hydrocarbons. I drown mine with any type of lubricant when it sticks and it's usually go-to-go for another couple of years.

Be careful around the throttle / throttle body / TPS with 'carb' cleaner. It's not good for the TPS. Use a cleaner designed for throttle bodies or you could screw up your TPS. That's a bit of a pricey experience.

I actually used throttle body cleaner. I always say carb cleaner. I always thought they were the same thing. I guess not. I will be sure to keep using throttle body cleaner. Thanks!

I'll also check out the dashpot. My repair manual said that may be the problem, too. It seemed allright, but I'll try lubing it up.

I love Portland. Within 2 hours of driving, you can get to the biggest ocean in the world (1 1/2), lush forests (10 min), snow capped mountain peaks (1 1/2), desert (2). And it is the Rose City, if you like plants and flowers. It is really green!

I hope you find and eliminate your problem.

BTW, I regularly get upside-down on my back and lube up everything I can find that moves under my dash. This helps a lot of stickiness and squeeks I have found over the years.

I finally got around to getting rid of the high idle. First, I sprayed starter fluid on all the vacuum lines. I found nothing. What did the trick was drenching the dashpot in WD-40. I drove around for at least 45 minutes with no troubles at all. I can even hear the RPMs go down when I push in the clutch while shifting! Pretty cool! Thanks!

I also sprayed my front bumber and grill black with aresol spray in bedliner. It looks awesome. A buddy of mine just painted his whole Taco in that stuff....pretty tough looking!

I've got a '92 4runner and I've had a consistent high idle just like this one. After searching high and low I stumbled on this post and voila! stupid dashpot is working again and the idle seems to be fixed.

Awesome....definitely doing this to mine. Occasionally (daily once it heats up) mine will hang around 1400 rpms. I pop the gas real quick and it drops. I assumed IAC but Ill try this first.....its cheaper!
