High Beam Mystery

I noticed today that the high beams on my 92 4runner are not working and I have no idea how long they have been not working because I have a set of Hella 500's triggered by the high beams.

For the life of me I cannot figure out where the issue is and have no idea where to go from here.

Here is a break down of what is going on:

1. Changed bulbs and still not working.
2. The Hella 500's that are triggered by the the high beams via a relay are working perfectly.
3. The high beams work fine when flashing (I realize how funny this statement is).

Any suggesting on what to do next to troubleshoot this.

I tried this already. Got the whole thing apart and realized that this write up was for a 85 and I have a 92. Mine looked nothing like this. But I still cleaned up the contacts I could get to and put on some new grease.

I also realized after that if my Hella's are being triggered, it would mean this switch was working fine.

There was a recent thread on the 2nd gen contact cleaning. But as noted on the web page, if high beams come on w/ flash mode, then wiring, bulbs and relay is fine. And why does Hella relay work and high beams not? Could be a simple matter of current, relay takes maybe 0.1 amps of current to turn on. High beams take about 10 amps to turn on. Bad connection may flow enough current to trigger the relay but not enough to light the high beams. Might try checking the voltage at the back of the headlight connector under load to see if you can find out what is going on:

Thanks. I'll break out the meter and search for that thread.

My head light were on the fritz a while back when I got my 87. The lows worked fine but when I flicked on my brights, they just went dim. Turned out to be a bad ground. Ran some new ground wires and it solved the problem.
