Alright, it's been snowing but today it was warm out and decided to open the sunroof... Well, I got home and tried to close it... It won't close! It seems the "Unlock" button isn't working. I can depress it, But it won't unlock to be able to press the other button.

I am now at work, and I work in the mountains... The sunroof is open and it's supposed to snow here in about an hour or so... Anybody have a quick fix for this? I know I can open the card holder next to the sunroof button, and turn that little screw thing but I don't have anything to do it with. It there a way I can disable that button?

I just opend it up and removed that piece, so now i able to close the sunroof without having to press both buttons, still has the stock look features but the button is out of commission."

Sounds good.. but how would I go about doing this with no tools? and being quick about it, being I'm at work? Thanks!

You could always get some plastic for now. But open sunroofs arent good when its snowing.

gonna need a screw driver to turn it i believe boss.. didnt you toyota come with a tool kit?? my Japanese one did

It's possible.... But it has over 228K miles, In it's time I'm sure somebody has done something with it. All I have are the tools to change a flat.

Looks like it'll be a cold ride home!

I guess this is why I should have kept the kit I bought in the truck, and not the garage!

LOL.
Any flat head screw driver will work. The one in the kit is the L shaped one.
If you take the "card door " trim piece out of the headliner you could use a dime or a penny!?

Got it closed after my 50 minute commute down the mountain in snow and wind last night

took maybe 5 minutes to close... I think I'll look for a way to just bypass the unlock button ... or just replace the switch. I need my sunroof this summer!

Glad you got it closed, and yes, you need to get it fixed before summer. I love my sunroof!

I just had something similar happen to me yesterday and after spending the night searching various forums, I found lots of mention of stripped teeth and hundreds if not thousands to fix. My sunroof would move a little back and forth, but would not close.
First, I found that the pins on the ends of the air deflector arms had come out but could easily be replaced by pushing the air deflector down which pulls the arms slightly forward. My sunroof would then close half way. Hmmm...progress...so in my case it did not seem to be stripped teeth. I remembered reading on another post that holding down the "tilt" button for 15 seconds would release the motor and allow one to close the sunroof manually. This did not work for me. Maybe 3rd gen?
I looked in my owners manual to see if it said anything about a reset procedure, and found this tidbit of information: To normalize the moon roof - push and hold the switch on the "Tilt Up" side until the moon roof tilts all the way up and then tilts down a little automatically. BTW, its under moon roof in the index, not sunroof.
This apparently can occur if the battery is disconnected; run down or the jam protection has been activated even once, and the vehicle has been turned off since.
The first time I tried this it didn't work, so I disconnected my battery for about 10 minutes, reconnected, and tried again. It worked! my sunroof now works perfectly again. Hope this helps someone else.

I know this is old but I had this happen to me today at the post office. It's a gorgeous day here in Tucson so I decided to open my moon roof. I'm enjoying the beautiful weather when I pull into the post office parking lot, go to close my moon roof and it won't. I fiddle with it for about 5 minutes then finally grow impatient and say F it. I go in and mail my package. Now, I have to go to Target and will be in there for an extended length of time and don't want it open that long. So, I go to Target and park, get out my tools and start to fart around with it. I get it to close manually with a 3/8" drive ratchet, short extension, 1/4" socket and the flat tip screwdriver tip fitted in the socket. It worked great as a substitute for the screwdriver that is supposed to be in the Toyota kit. By this time I'm spent and just want to go in, get my stuff and go home. I finally make it home and tear apart the switch only to find out that the stupid little plastic square mechanism that the override button moves to free up the actual switch is broken. I take that and the spring that it is attached to out, put the override button back in just to fill the void and voila, it works.

so..can i like disable that button i gotta push to close my moonroof in my '92 4runner..

i'd rather just be able to push the switch to close it..instead of pushing the button and the switch lol

Yeah, just take the cover off and underneath there are 3 little screws, undo those screws and you will see the simple little mechanism that is under the switch. It looks like a little square and all the override button does is it has a little ramp piece that when the button is pushed it moves that little square that is spring loaded out from under the moon roof switch. Just take it out and put it back together.
