Help remove rusted drums 87 4R

Hi,

My GF just bought an 87 4Runner from oregon. Basically, the whole thing is rusted. I have replaced most things, but for some reason I really can't get the rear drums off the truck. I have tried the two little holes for an m8 bolt (rusted and stripped), also I cut the backplate with a sawzall and banged on the drum with a 10lb sledge hammer to no avail.

I can't think of any other way to get them off the truck. I have slide hammers as well, but they also don't work. Any suggestions about how to get these rusted things off?!?

Since your backing plates are ruined, I have had luck with getting pry bars on each side or top to bottom and also having some one to tap on the edges with a hammer.

Red face

You have backed off the brake adjusters??

One tool to hold the lever away another to turn the star wheel

sprayed with the penetrating oil of your choice??

Since you already destroyed the backing plate take it a step further.
Destroy the drums.
Get a 4.5" grinder and some cut off wheels and cut off the drums in sections

I like that idea. That will definitely get them off! thanks

I was just about to buy a complete rear axle assembly and just change the whole thing.
