Can anyone positively ID this as an 8" Detroit?? If not what is it??? Who ever installed it, mauled the housing in a vice!! Runs fine though on the rig it came out of. WAS in an 88 2WD PU, going into my 4WD 86 PU

You might wanna make sure it's an 8" ring gear and not a 7.5".

I believe those marks are indicative of the ring gear bolts failing. Allowing the ring to be driven into the carrier creating those gouges. Notice the spacing. My best guess anyway. Or they were milled there to aid oil flow.

It's definetely not a stock carrier, whether a 7.5" or 8". You'll find out when you try to fit your 4wd axles in it.

It looks to me like the pinion is contacting the carrier.

Regardless of how the marks got there, the axle it was in ran and sounded fine. YES, it is an 8" BTW. Still no one has ID'd the locker?

EDIT: Just got an ID. It is a Detroit Truetrac N61610

Looks like the pinion rubbing on the carrier. I see some gear paint on there so someone may have known what they were doing... but that Truetrac definetly doesnt come with those markings on it =) I know I installed one.

We had those marks from the pinion hitting the carrier. The crush sleave was loosened up. Tightened it. bearings failed later that year

This info is 100% wrong. The pinion bearing are worn on the diff, causing it to move towards the carrier.
