I'm trying to replace my accessory belts and the middle one is being a huge pain in the you know what....

Here are some pictures of how far I've gotten it so far.





As you can see it's not quite on the track.

You should also be able to see that the tensioner pulley is completely loosened. So I'm at a loss on how to get this belt on? It's a Dayco belt I think the part number is 17443. But I'd have to double check that.

So are there any tools or tricks to getting this thing on?

Um...I think your belt is on backwards. The ribbing should be on the inside...

Yeah I thought it looked funny too but I didn't twist it at all, and it tapers to smaller on the inside. Kind of looks like this... \_/

it's hard to tell, but what's that part number on the belt?

should be a 17340 for the AC belt

PS is 17443

and the Alt is 15345

That's the part numbers I've got. The belt you see on there already for Alternator belt.. That's 15345. That fit easy. 17343 does not fit. 17443 is the really big belt, I haven't attempted that one yet. The first time I went to Advanced they gave me 17340. That was smaller than 17343. It's interesting that you say that number because that's what came up in their catalog too. But as I said it's much smaller.

Okay I gave up on the Dayco belts... I went and bought another brand... Duralast from Autozone. The Duralast belts fit fine. Not sure what the deal is with the Dayco stuff and my rig.

I have another question. I was trying to tighten down the Idler Pulley and I didn't line up the threads so I ended up stripping the bolt. I was wondering if this product comes with all the hardware or if I will have to buy hardware separate.

Also, can I buy 2 of these to replace both pulleys? The reason I ask is it says, "Pulley only Power steering" But they look to be the same size.

Note: Yes I only stripped the bolt, but I was thinking I'd replace the pulley's anyway since they are looking a bit worn.

I tried aftermarket belts. Wasn't impressed. Belt was still loose with the tensioner at maximum adjustment. I replaced with Toyota belts, and haven't had a problem since. I'll stick with OEM for future belt purchases... right fit the first time no questions.

Same thing on my nissan frontier... Dayco belts... too big. Gates belts... too big. Still loost at max adjustment on the tensioner bolts. OE belts fit like a glove.

Visit your dealer. I'd highly doubt those pulley's are more than 10 bucks a piece. You could also get all necessary hardware at the same time.

I've never had issues with my Dayco's, bottom line... 9 outta 10 times, it's the wrong belt. I worked at Advance Auto Parts for 2 1/2 years, and I can't even BEGIN to tell you all the returns I use to do for people, that someone gave them the wrong belt to begin with... You really have to know what you're doing when looking up the belts, or you can get them all screwed up...


As far as the pulley, usually the pulley is just that, a pully... it wont include the bolt, or the little sliding peice the pulley bolts too. Just go down to the hardware store and pick up a bolt that's long enough and is threaded all the way (it can't have a smooth shank on it, or you wont get all the adjustment out of it). If need be, remove the one off the PS tentioner and take it with you to size it up. But, if the bearings are bad in the pulley, then by all means replace it, otherwise you'll be replacing that new belt AGAIN down the road when that pulley locks up, lol


btw, the numbers I listed above are the EXACT ONES that I put on my 91 during it's recent rebuild, so with it being a different generation, the numbers might be different

I too have had trouble getting a Dayco belt to fit the air conditioner compressor. They have always been tough to get on. Last time I changed it out I could not get it to fit at all. I had to return the belt and get a different one.

I doubt that the Duralast pully will have the hardware you need. You might be able to find one at a junkyard.

If you need to get the truck running, just leave the A/C compressor belt off. You don't need it anyway. As long as you have your water pump and alternator belt on you can drive all day.

Actually that idler pulley is about $140. I priced one a couple years ago for the power steering idler. I ended up just buying a new bearing from the local bearing supply for about $10.

You can get the entire assembly from the dealer for less than $30.
