Help with DIY roof rack - how to attach to roof

hey all,

so i've been looking to weld up a custom roof rack but am having trouble figuring out the best way to attach it to the truck. my truck had some crappy factory roof bars (i wouldn't even call them racks) which i threw away when i painted my truck. i still have the holes up top which i just put some stainless steel bolts into so they wouldn't rust out.

my question is this: if i ran a piece of flat bar down the side and screwed them on using these 4 bolt holes, would this be enough to hold a spare 33" tire, hi-lift, and possibly gear?

i'm not sure how strong the roof is or if those little bolts would hold anything.

truck is a '95 22RE 4runner

You mean the top ??

Not down the side Correct??

How much do you figure the rack and all the junk is going to weigh??

Would you lift that weight with those 4 bolts??

Are those bolts that go all the way through the roof??

Fender washers on the bottom would be a given.

Correctomundo

  • Rack - 45
  • 33" spare - 50
  • hi-lift - 15
  • gear - 30
= total 140 pounds

Would you lift that weight with those 4 bolts??
that's the question! i'm not sure if yakima or thule mounts are much better. they are certainly more $$$ and i can't custom build the actual rack.

Are those bolts that go all the way through the roof??
No, they don't go through the roof.

What pray tell do they go to ??

Do you have a problem going through your roof??

140 pounds is not really much weight but wind resistance must also be figured in to the equation.
