heli coil + 22re

I'm thinking about getting a heli-coil kit. I have some stripped exhaust studs that need fixed, and I think those are 8x1.25mm (am I correct with this?)

the 8x1.25mm kit is about $35. What about other size bolts in the 22re? Is there an "all in one" sized kit? Or should I buy the different sizes separately? What sizes of kits would be required for the 22re? I know the 22re has about 3 or 4 different bolt sizes, so which ones would be the most handy to have?

Yep, they are 8x1.25. I'd just recommend buying kits just as you need them, as you know, they are a bit pricey. The other common size is 6X1.25 BTW.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy the exhaust studs and nuts you need from the dealer. There are 2 different lengths (4 of each) the longer ones go on the top. I've yet to find an aftermarket supplier that makes the correct length. Also....TAKE YOUR TIME! When repairing the stud holes with it still in the truck, it gets a bit tricky at the holes on the firewall side. An angle drill helps.

While you have the exhaust manifold off of the truck, take it to your local machine shop and have them belt sand the surface to smooth out the warpage.

Enjoy!

Yeah, when we were doing the headgasket we replaced the exhaust studs. I have an extra set in case I ever needed them. Had to get them straight from the dealer. We stopped by autozone, carquest, even 3 local bolt and fastener shops and none of them had the correct lenghts. So we got 2 sets from the dealer.

One last question to revive this old post. Are the threads 8x1.25 fine or coarse threads? If I had to say, they look like coarse, but would like to know for sure before I buy the kit.

I stripped one of mine doing my swap and it was a m10x1.5 IIRC.

As I've mentioned this before, throw away the factory stock self-locking nuts... they cause the stud to spin inside the head. Just use a hex nut and lock washer.
I'll be sure to replace the locking nuts. I needed to go to the parts store for some bolts anyway for my dash that keeps rattling.

I won't be able to tap at different sizes because I'll only be buying the m 8x1.25 kit and not an entire set.

One thing that worries me is that we already tried (and failed) to replace some threads. Since the holes have already been drilled out and tapped for use with a previous heli coil, will I be able to re-drill the hole at the proper size again and retap the threads, or will I need to just drill larger holes, tap some new threads, and then use larger studs?
