Heating Problem

OK, here is the problem. When I start my truck and start driving, within the first 2-3 miles my temperature gauge will go all the way in to the red. Then when I drive for about another mile the temperature gauge goes back to normal. What's weird is, if I let the truck sit and idle and warm all the way up in the driveway it won't do it. Does anyone know what is causing it?

Specs:
- '94 Toyota 4x4
- 2.4L Engine (Stock)

Thanks!

here's a little on one type of temperature 'overshoot' problem complements of yotatech member 4Crawler: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...tml#Thermostat

also, if there's a bit of air in the system it may cause the thermostat to momentarily stick closed, as could a failing thermostat, which should be solved by purging all the air from the cooling system by filling it with the front of the truck raised high than the back (jackstands, ramps, sloped driveway). if the problem continues to occur then there may be a leak somewhere.

OK, just went out and had a look at the truck. It seems to be having water dripping from the front of the engine about mid way up on the block. It's to tight in there for me to see exactly were it's coming from. Water Pump??

Note: The only time it leaks is when the engine is running, it seems to stop when the engine is off.

Thanks!
