heads n headers 3.0

Let’s start with a few questions for the gurus yota. Background: Recently purchased 92 4runner 3.slow, 5-speed, 134,000 miles, stock, with oil leak streaming down bell housing. After pulling trans and finding rear main dry, pulled crossover and looks like leak coming from under intake on passenger side (not cam plug, valve cover, etc). Pulled powerless plant (will remove intake this week) to track down leak. Never seen a head gasket leak just oil…but I’ve learned to expect unique problems. This sweet deal that needed a little resealing is rapidly turning into a money pit.

Presuming that the head is confirmed as the culprit, should I go with engnbldr gaskets and bolts (though I don’t see them listed lately)? Planning on surfacing the head, what’s this I’ve read about a .020? limit and are there specs and measuring points to check (maybe the dealer resurfaced when they did the HG warranty in 1998)?

Needless to say, I only wanna do this one time (or less), so I’d like to deal with the exhaust crossover heat/restriction issue. I’d like to do headers, but the prices are rather outrageous $1,050 nwor (could build a nice 305 chevy for less), $600 thorley, or $400+ downeys and a 1” body lift to clear the floorboards. Not the greatest of options. Anybody just eliminate the crossover and run a lower Y pipe successfully?
