Headlight problem

Having problems with my lights, I've only owned the truck for 3 weeks so im not very familiar with it, its an 88 4runner with a 22RE.. alot different compared to my 82 SR5.

My low beams quit tonight, high beams still function fine but the indicator on the dash no longer comes on, markers and signals are working fine. I checked the harness near the battery and it looks like someone replaced it, looks newer and has a p/n tag on it. My low beams/high beams have been some what erratic, one day a low beam will be out, the next its working fine, when I got the truck one of my high beams was dead but is working fine now.. When I turn my lights on I don't hear the relay working so that is the first thing I will check.

If the relay and fuses are good, What steps should I take to test the system? I guess a good place to start would be the switch.

check the combination switch, sometimes the contacts can get pitted from years of use. You can clean the contacts with a file and that usually fixes the problem.

Yeah start by checking the combination switch. The FSM shows continuity charts in order to test it. The lack of headlight bulb on the dash is probably just a blown light, unless there is some underlying issues in the harness itself.

All three of mine needed MF(multi function) switch restoration.

www.4crawler.com has a write-up on trouble shooting your light/switch issue.

not sure, the high beam indicator went away when the low beams died, the truck has 450,000km's on it. I havn't dug into it yet but when I figure out what it is il post up.

Easy fix, the passenger side was a dead lamp, drivers side connector was shattered. Now I just need to aim them, they are WAY off.
