So im in the process of Header shopping. i have a 1995 toyota 4Runner with the 3VZE and its 2WD. ive been looking at doug thorley and NWOR and they both say that their headers only work on 4WD. i think i can still run them with 2WD cuz the T4R is the same whether its 2WD or 4WD except for the transfer case. I plan on racing in Score and BITD events in Class 7 (Score) 7200 (BITD). i need something that will not only last, but something that will give me some good power gains. Thanks

I would call them both and see if they can explain why it can only be used on 4wd. And see if they will give you a discount if you slap a sticker on your ride.

It may have something to do with those pesky Cali CARB regulations.

Gonna keep an eye on this thread, as I have a 2wd and live in Cali. This would definitely be a nice mod, but I'm assuming that after this install it wouldn't be possible to pass smog as you no longer would have the EGR and reed valves to help bring down emissions!

NWOR headers have all emissions connections, but no ghey CARB numbers, so your out of luck there.

I have a NWOR header for the 22RE and it is everything they claim, I'm going to guess that the V6 headers will live up to their claims.

yeah once i fully build my 4Runner, its not even gonna be close to passing smog or even be street legal for that matter. the nice thing is that it wont be too noticeable that its not street legal because most of the mods will be under the hood, except for my long travel suspension. anyways after some research, i came to the conclusion that the NWOR headers are the better choice since they will def seal better. my whole exhaust will be custom built, so for my muffler im going to be using a gibson race muffler and im going to try to get the exhaust to come out before the rear tire. i wont be building it until i have all my parts together, but once i do, this is gonna be a super awesome build!

I just got a set of thorleys myself, but I had the same question as u with my 2wd.

What I found was that my 2wd 4runner is still on a 4x4 frame.... The way to tell is that the torsion bars connect at upper control arm. Also should have 6 lug hub, not 5. The problem with true 2wd fitment is the torsion bars connect at lower control arm and are in the path of header.

Yeah I couldn't understand why they were only 4wd when they're the same thing. Luckily the torsion bars won't be a problem for me since I'm going to put a long travel suspension kit on it for racing so it gets rid of the torsion bars. Now I just need to decide between NWOR and Doug Thorleys

I would stick with thorleys, about $606, they're quality SS with ceramic coat, and come with y pipe. And are CA legal.....I know u sound like u don't care about that but I just smog checked mine for first time in years... I guess new laws passed. And now they need carb approval # even on new air intake... I had to toss my cheepy one and get a legal k&n for them to pass me....

My truck will have way too many illegal parts but who cares! I'm still going to drive it everyday, and that's why I was trying to choose because both of them have the emission fittings. And actually I obviously live in California so I do care about smog, I'm still a gross polluter but I want to help as much as I can to help the environment. And I didn't know about the intake because I have a weapon r intake and it doesn't have the emission or carb # and I still barely BARELY passed smog.

It's just someone's oversight. The headers won't work on a 2wd TRUCK, but will work on the 4Runner for the reason mentioned- the 4R uses the 4wd chassis even when 2wd, but the truck has a different chassis for 2wd models due to the difference in torsion bar positions as mentioned.

As for cali emissions, if the equipment is there- EGR, etc, you will likely not get questioned about it IF the pipes merge into one ahead of the converter and the converter is stock or approved aftermarket and in the stock location with O2 sensors in place and such. If you're running dual pipes out the back, that's another story but could get passed if the truck goes through the referee program.

im not going to be running duals because i makes the exhaust heavier and with my system, im going to try to get the exhaust to come out before the rear tire! since im going to be putting a 36 gal fuel cell in the spare tire spot, i dont really have the choice of where my exhaust can go.

Yeah I've looked into them, but they don't seem to be as good as the NWOR or Doug Thorleys. Plus I believe that they don't have the emission fittings on them.

Anybody else. I'm getting ready to pull my engine and def getting a set. So. Helpfull insight would be good. There has to b more out there with v6 headers.
