Question Head gasket - 22RE

My old head gasket has a few holes where my new Fel-Pro gaskets do not. They appear to be coolant passages between cylinders 1&2 and 3&4. Any insight as to the pros/cons of those passages being blocked?

match it to the head/block, if the head has the holes the gasket will too.

if the middle gasket was ruined after a couple minutes, it would indicate a warped head/uneven block


i dont like felpro HG, take a look at an OEM toyota for comparison

What he said ^^^^^^^^ If your head gasket blew on you before and you did not get your head surfaced than its going to blow again more than likely. The reason it goes is usually because the the head warps from overheating. The block is iron and the head is aluminum. They have to different expansion and contraction rates so a little too much heat and your head will warp. Take it to your local machine shop and have it surfaced. Its only $30-$40 and also make sure that you chase the threads in the block with a tap and run a die down your head bolts.

I was just hoping to get the truck home without having to tow it, so I tossed a new gasket in there. The head was warped though, so that didn't work too well .. . It's in my garage now though, and is being done right.

The block and head do have the coolant passages, but the gaskets do not. I've checked gaskets from several different companies, and none had those holes. One theory is that it may keep more coolant in the head. ??

Then go with an OEM head gasket. Toyota put the passages there for a reason so if it was mine I wouldn't use a gasket that blocked them.

The "new" OEM gasket is multilayer metal. Check one out.....you won't go back.

How 'bout the engbldr HGs? How do they compare to OEM?

I just bolted the head back on my 22re on top of a Fel-Pro. I didnt notic anything blocked, but its my first HG job. Anyone used Fel-Pro and had it work or am I goig to hve to redo the HG?

Are there OEM head gaskets with those holes? I've yet to find any.

Matt- You're certainly not the first person to use a Fel-Pro head gasket in a 22RE, so don't worry about it. My question was out of curiosity rather than concern.

i donno guys, i did my HG on my 22re with high compression rebuild and she's been sound. Mine's not missing holes though, maybe you got a 22r block ... not sure that would make a difference. All i know is that my fel-pro hg had all the holes, some were smaller than stock but that was on the intake side coolant holes (good idea since the hot valves are on the exhaust side ne who) good luck. Like they said, make sure to get your head resurfaced, got the dough, have it pressure checked for cracks and leaks too. good luck.

wow i just looked at those pics of the HGs and you have a serious warpage issue. those burnt through holes are due to the compression seal between cylinders breaking allowing hot gasses to burn across one cylinder into the opposing cylinder approaching tdc (pressurizing fresh air)

It's got the original 22RE block and head in it.

Yeah, it's pretty badly warped. It's going to the machine shop next week.
