Start by seeing if the egr valve is working. You can pull off a vacuum line and replace it with the one at the top of the egr and see if it will open.

well I tryed that, I pulled a vaccum line off of the intake. Thats right, right! Pull a line off that has suckion right? I did do that and it did not stall out/ sputter. Does that mean I need a new EGR valve? I know all my vaccum lines are hooked up right! I went over the diagram a few times! I just want to make 100% sure it is the EGR valve before I go and spend like 180 bones on it!

a neighbor mechanic told me today if its throwing a EGR code, and its not fixed, the computer will screw with the mixture and fry the fuel injectors and clog up the cat. converter... i doubt this is true, but maybe you might want to look into it... i sure am...

Sounds like the EGR is bad.

If it does not stumble/stall when vacuum is applied (Use your mouth!) to the EGR valve, then it's NOT functioning. This is the same test that's required for smog check (except the techs have nifty MityMite pumps).
Non-functioning EGR valves can be caused several things, with "clogged passages" being high on the list. Running "rich", huh? |

running rich (high hydrocarbon emissions/ HC) does not mean that the EGR is bad. running rich at 'cruise' RPM's points a tad towards the EGR but doesn't mean much either though.
Now on the other hand, high NOx readings at cruise would point to the EGR.

If you dont have a cat on the truck...why worry about the egr...just bypass it and call it good, you already fail emmisions tests due to the lack of a cat, or at least in the state of maine you do.

I second this. There is no point in picking and choosing which emissions equipment you want. Also dont forget to check the filter in the modulator before the EGR. Shove a 10 k resistor in the connector for the temp sensor and the code will disappear. click on the link in my sig and you will find a write-up under the projects section.

ok I dident get a egr because the parts house dident have the gasket for it so I will wait! I looked at the egr mod filter and it looks nice and clean! Im just trying to ge tto the bottem of this stuff. Truck runs good and has good power it just pings a little and throws a check engine light after driving in the highway for a while!
