Has anyone done an IFS differential rebuild?

Hi All,

Well noticed lately that my 4runner had a vibration coming from the front. Checked all the usual things and noticed that the right side short shaft has a lot of movement,

Firstly wondering if anyone has done a rebuild.
Secondly how involved is it?

It all depends on if you have needles bearings in there.

I just had a similar issue with my 87 x-cab. couldnt figure out what the vibration was until we got it up on a lift and saw the halfs were a little loose. it was actually cheaper to buy a used low mileage setup than to have it rebuilt. from what i have read about gears, they are not a simple thing to do so i took the easy route and took the opportunity to re-gear the truck to 4.56 gears.

Hi Zuk,

Thanks. Have the parts coming and hopefully get the vibration gone. Been a busy week on the old girl. Have fitted energy suspension to the front. Also replaced the sway bar links. All brake parts replaced along with new rotors. New valve cover gaskets and intake gaskets. Replaced all the trans shifter linkage bushings and got rid of that vibration. Couple of things left to do and hopefully have a somewhat quieter ride. New rear tires being fitted tomorrow. Had a local shop try to do a wheel alignment but because of rims couldnt do. They forgot to tighten the steering linkage and right front wheel went sideways and scrubbed the tire. Had to put it on the back as vibrations made it undrivable. Hurt the back pocket when the tires are 163 a piece

They should be buying you a new tire if they messed it up.

I know its been while but I am running into same problem. I had the Canadian distributors for marlin crawler build me a front 3rd, and now my passenger side axle stub shaft is wobbly and loose. After pulling the diff today and removing the stub, I can see there is NO needle bearing, like I had in my original 3rd (which I still have). Was it easy to install the needle bearing? I am trying to the get company to warranty the diff, once I tell them they did not use the needle bearing. If they wont, I plan to install one so that it will not be loose, and hold the stub straight. Where did you order yours from?

I bored the carrier to press fit the bearings on my Bridgeport mill because the 4.88 diff I bought didn't have the bearings and my stock diff does. It is important to note that the inside diameter of the bearing is the same as the inside diameter of cast iron carrier without the bearing( as long as it is not wobbled out) so you cannot simply press the bearing into the carrier unless you machine it.

Here is how I did it
