Hard to start or won't start warm.
I need some input. My 89 Toyota truck starts fine when cold but after warmed up then shut off for a while it won't start until I squirt ether into the throttle body. It's a 22RE engine with 122,000 miles. If I shut it off and restart it immediately it's OK but if it sits for 15 mins or more, wont start. Starter cranks good but no go. I get a trouble code 51 on the OBD test which indicates a faulty TPS or TPS circuit but once started the engine runs great. I assume there would be some driveability issues if the TPS was bad. Anybody have an answer for this problem ?

verify the idle air controller (under the throttle body) is operating properly= open when cold, closed when warm, and go from there.

I just fixed this problem on my 92 DLX 4x4. I went through all the posts and checked everything, IAC, TPS, and lots of other letters. It turned out to be a simple fix. The return line from the charcoal canister to the gas tank was plugged. To check it I just loosened the gas cap. after 20 min it was still running strong. No more idle drop when pressing the brakes, or running the a/c. Hope this helps someone!

I have a 1996 V6 4Runner and am having the same problem. It starts fine when cold but when it's warm(after 2 or three stops) it doesn't want to start. It turns over fine but just won't start. Toyota dealer was not able to diagnose it. I changed the spark plugs and had no effect. I get no codes back from the computer saying anything is wrong. I will probably try the fuel filter and maybe the fuel pump next. Any advice?

MonkeyJump, I would check the ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor). The ECU uses the ECT to tell it whether the engine is cold or warm, so it can adjust the starting and running mixture accordingly. If the ECT is lying, you won't necessarily get a code, because the ECU has no way of independently verifying the truth of the ECT output. If the ECT says the engine is cold when it's actually warm, the ECU will enable the cold start injector and flood the engine, causing a no-start.
One thing you should do is to unplug the cold start injector before you attempt a warm start, to see if that helps. That will tell you whether or not my theory above holds any water.

I replaced the ECT sensor today.......same problem, had to wait an hour before it would start without an ether shot. For some reason it's not getting fuel on the warm restart. Everyone tells me it's the TPS but it idles perfectly and runs great. And if it was the fuel pump or filter why does it run so good otherwise, 75-80 mph runs great.

Good point on the fuel filter and pump. So where did you get your ECT sensor from and how much was it? Let me know if that solved the issue for you. Sounds like we have the exact same problem. It runs perfectly normal once started. To get it to start I have to pump the gas at the perfect time and keep it turning over and it eventually goes. I'll keep you posted if I figure mine out.

I'm pretty new to this...working on my own car. But I'm committed to learn. So how to I figure out what the cold start injector is and where it is. I do have a mechanics repair manual so maybe I can find it in there when I get home tonight.

Monkeyjump, I just noticed that you have a 1996 4runner. That's actually a 3rd generation 4runner, whereas this particular forum is for 2nd gen models. While you're certainly welcome to participate here, and to any advice we can give you, you might get more specific help if you ask your question in the forum in this link. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/ There are actually quite a lot of differences between the 2nd and 3rd gen 4runners (totally different engine and completely different front suspension, among others), and we could steer you in the wrong direction pretty easily.

Have you tried holding the throttle down? If so does it help with starting? My truck does almost the exact same thing however if I hold the gas pedal down she fires up after a few cranks. I have replaced everything with no change
