hard start

okay. hopefully i am posting in the right area. well i have an 86 runner, 4cyl. i just got dropped in a reman engine but it has a hard time turning over. i got the engine to start and i set base timing. it runs fine just has a really hard time starting. i also replaced the starter, battery and harness to and from the starter.... and could a pilot bearing cause a hard start. any ideas

When you say that it has a hard time turning over, do you mean that it seems to crank slow/intermittently or do you mean that it cranks well but doesn't seem to fire off? When you get it running, does it run well both warm and cold, down the highway, etc? Does it accelerate well? Any driveability issues?

I ask because lots of difficulties with starting (timing issues, vacuum leaks, efi problems) that cause hard starting will cause other things.

As far as the pilot bearing causing problems with starting, I don't see how. Pilot shaft from the transmission goes in there and if there were a problem, all it would do would be to make the transmission turn and it's in neutral so that wouldn't put a lot of drag on anything. But, maybe there is something I'm missing.

I'm assuming it's an EFI engine -- 86 4runners are efi, right?

Oh, with a newly installed engine you might want to check the valve adjustment as well as compression and all that stuff. Should be ok, but you won't know till you check.
