hard to get into 2 wheel drive

My old 88 truck has not been in 4 wheel drive for a long time due to manual locking hub gear not engaging. Well I fixed that but now the gear shifter is hard to get back into 2 wheel operation. Any tips to make it easier?. Guess it missed four wheeling so much it doesn't want to go back to 2 H.

In the past I have seen some of the shifters actually not in correct. The way that I test is to pull the shifter and with a large screw driver, I move the shifting forks manually. If it moves fairly easy by doing this, I would suspect the shifter just needs to be installed correctly. I have seen the shifter stick in 180 degrees backwards.

If it is difficult shifting by moving the forks with a screw driver, I would suggest changing the fluids or it may have mechanical issues. It may just need to be shifted several times to get all of the linkage moving again as well.

With my truck I had the same problem. Everytime I would be switching from 4HI back into 2HI and I could push as hard as I could but it would not switch. I would always be switching it at a complete stop though.. I figured out that if you're still moving around 5mph or less and move it into 2wd it glides in super smooth. So I would try that first..

Red face

Sometimes you get some torque bind if your on a hard surface .Like you might be just checking things out.

The simple thing is to just back up a few feet does the trick most of the time.

then you might be correct it wants to go 4wheelin!!
