gutless 22re?

Hey guys. I won a 87 ifs 4x4 22re p/u. It has 200,000 on it and seems to run just fine. I have two questions, though. First of all the damn thing can't get out of it's own way. I mean going to tahoe up some of the grades is a real challenge! It can barely pull small hills. And second of all, my valvetrain is noisy. Are 22re's just naturally noisy? Or maybe i need a valve adjustment? Real reliable and seems to run ok other than that? Any idea's?

thanx

Sounds like it needs a valve lash adjustment.... and how did you win it?

Is this something i could attempt myself? I'm a novice at working on stuuf. I'm ok, but i don't want to screw anything up.

yeah, it's a piece of cake, get a haynes or chiltons manual.
but remember, it's got 200K on it, you'd be tired too. run a compression test and see what you get. when was the last time it was tuned?
the old 22re isn't a high performer, but tuned it'll get you where you want to go. it's not real cost effective to dump a ton of cash into it with upgrades unless you're a serious offroader, my .02.
but it's almost bulletproof, serviceable, and a great motor for a truck.

yeah it's just my commuter. Although it sees a little off road now and again. So far i'm pretty impressed with it's overall durability. now i just need to fix ..........

the brakes
timing cover leak
whacked out temp gage
new tires
valve adjustment
etc.

i'm lazy lol

i'd do a full tune up on it if it hasn't been done recently -- spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, air filter etc. also adjust the valves(too much lash results in less valve lift and less power).

you may also look into replacing your fuel filter. a clogged up fuel filter can most definitely make a truck gutless.
