Going to look at used engine...advice/tips please.
On local craigslist, engine advertised as "22re engine from 1992 toyota pickup. Cylinder head is professionally reconditioned and never used." They want $300 for it.
I'm thinking of going to look it at with my brother (his 22re has a headgasket issue). Couple things I am wondering:
- Head is not on the engine, I guess that is good so we can see the cylinders, what do we look for?
- How can I tell if the head has been reconditioned? I'm assuming it will be perfectly clean, I guess we'll have it checked for flatness when/if we buy it.
- Is $300 a good price?
- He did not mention intake or any other components, so I'm assuming right now that it is only the block and head. For that price would you also expect the valve cover and oil pan? I would want those, but I don't want to be unrealistic.
One final question. Without the head or manifolds on, it should be light enough that we can pick it up and put it in the back of my 4Runner, right?
Thanks Guys.

I dont think that is a bad price, I wouldnt buy it with out a valve cover or oil pan just because grit and what not could of goten in there. The head should be shiny and clean. Look at the block really carefully see if it as any piston play and also push on the crank shaft pulley, see if it has play also. I lifted a honda CRV engine but i was squacking and moaning so i would definatly have him help you lift it in your runner.

the block is easily lift able by one person. I think 300 is a fair price for a whole motor(intake, exhaust sensors and such) mileage around 150 to 200 k. If you see in the cylinders, obviously look for scores along the walls, any rust or imperfections, stripped bolt holes. If the oil pan is off and the crank is attached, check that out and the pistons and rods. You can bring something straight, like a carpenters square to see if the head is warped or anything. A new head should look like this.http://www.toyotalexusforum.com/clas...ego-225-a.html

Thanks for the responses guys. So we went down and bought it, we paid $350 and got the engine, recon'd head, additional head, alternator, starter, intake, exhaust, sensors, some pulleys, etc. So we felt like it was a pretty good deal.
For the record, a block (with crank, pistons, etc) is still pretty darn heavy. I'd say 120lbs as a guess.
The recon'd head looks pretty good, but we'll be checking it out further this week. The block is going to be mine to build up as a replacement engine for my truck.
