Hey Guy,

My 1994 4Runner V6 with 118,000 miles is dripping oil in two places. It is not actually dripping, but I see the oil form a drip and I am losing oil.

First under the bar, I dont know the name of this bar, but I have a red arrow point at it. Every time I look underneath after driving, I see a drip forming of oil.

The second is the oil drain plug. Where I take the oil plug off, I always see a drip of oil forming. By the way, the oil pan has a small film oil coating around it.

All underneath the truck there is a film of oil as if someon sprayed the entire area of with a bottle of oil. I just cleaned the underside with degreaser only a month ago less than 300 miles of driving, and it is covered with film of oil. It is definately oil.

I have never changed the valve cover gaskets.

The whole enchilada may stem from a single source. If you are fortunate, you reused your oil bolt plug washer and are now dealing with the consequences, that is if you are lucky.

Thus always use a brand spanking new hard plastic washer every single time you crack that bolt loose and no wire hangers, ever.

Now, if you did not even use a washer then you kinda sorta need one or this kinda sorta thing can happen. It is quite common. The bolt was not designed to clamp shut, it was designed to crush down, on a plastic, rubber, leather maybe even a copper washer. Whatever does it for you.

Other wise, respray with degreaser and get it looking kissy cute down there. Then take a peek every day, you should be able to easily isolate the souce.

Oh, and if I sound a little bossy...

If its dripping fromt he drain plug, thast prbably where its leaking.. is it anywhere above the oil pan? Or is there drips coming from around the upper part of the oil pan?

Try using a fabric type drain plug gasket instead of metal or plastivc see what taht does forya

you can easily rule out the oil pan by looking to see if there is seepage around the gasket. You can sort of rule out the valve covers by taking a good look around the gasket for oil, although they are somewhat hidden.

Like posted above, clean it again and drive for a few days and then crawl under there and look for where the oil is coming from.

Purple power, pressue washer, wipe it down then drive it and find the leak.

My oil was leaking from many various places and exactly where you show in your pictures. Mine turned out to be the oil cooler that was leaking and running down all over making it appear as multiple oil leaks.

2 Orings and a washer/seal for $11.50 and it doesnt leak a drop now.

Defantly clean everything down with de-greaser then you will be able to find the leak.

I reuse the oil plug gaskets all the time, just make sure you clean off the pan and snug the plug up (not too tight!)

My best guess is that's from all the oil that pours over the frame when you change the filter...

Dont buy plastic oil plug washers from kragen. Go to Toyota and pay the big bucks for a good one (like $0.50). They have a very thin layer of felt on both sides with aluminum in the center that crushes down to seal.

It might be comming from the passenger side valve cover...

Ditto...same thing happened to me. Most of the time,the oil cooler is overlooked when it comes to leaks.
