im thinking about adding a 4 inch lift to my 94 pickup and wanted some insight as to what gears i should put in if i run 33 X 12.50s. should i replace them at all? they are 4.10s now.

upwords of a grand for a shop to install them.

and yes you need the same gear ratio front and rear.

if you are not experianced with setting gears then I would not try it.

If you can, remove both 3rd's and send them out to get the gears changed then reinstall them.

that would save you some money.

yeah but you will be working the clutch really hard and you will lose a ton of low end. gas milage will go down a ton probably and speedo will be off quite a bit too.

Look for the axle code on your vin sticker on the inside of your drivers side door.

When I changed my gears it put my speedometer back correct...

5.29's and 36" tires is almost exactly the same gearing as it was stock.

With a '94 don't assume you have 4.10 gears just yet. What is you're axle code? 4.88's are the way to go for 33s with a standard. If you have some local junk yards around see if you can find a Toyota set of 4.88 gears. '93-'95 3vze(V6) automatic trucks and 4runners came with 4.88 gears. I got a complete set for just $300.

Not with a '87 4runner. 60mph on your speedometer is actually 55-56mph, don't belive me pull out the GPS. Or you should check your speedometer gear or your guage cluster.

For me, 60 miles per hour is actually 59.41 so not exactly 60, but close.

heres the math, simple ratio: 4.10/28 = x/33 solve for x.
4.10*33=28x (33" is new tire, 28" is stock tire)
135.3=28x
x=4.8321 (equivalent gear ratio)

now to determine how far off the speedo is.

4.8321/4.88=x (to get percentage)
x=.99019
60*x = ? or
60*0.99019 = 59.4116

Now if my truck came stock with 31s, 4.88s would make my 60mph on the speedo equal 53.66, but it came with 28"s stock. Everything would depend on what was the stock setup.

Wow - a whole lot of calculations that are absolutely pointless because they assume the speedo is accurate from the factory - which in my experience, it's not.

If you REALLY want to know there are only two ways:
- time over distance with a stopwatch
- GPS (and even this may not be accurate enough)

We're really only talking about a few % here - you need a REALLY good measurement. Even police radar may be off by enough to not be used.
