So....on that note, what are a good set of gears for a V6? I am not sure what OEM gears I have.

Not everyones setup is the same....I am running 31x10.5x15 and would like a gear setup a little bit higher than what one would need for 31x10.5x15, so I can get some more wheel spin.

Your options are 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29 and 5.71.

Since you say you're running 31's most of us recommend 4.56's but if you want a little lower end grunt I'd say go with the 4.88's. However since you have the V6 (and thus more hp than the 22re 4 cylinder that I have) you can probably just stick with the 4.56's.

On the other hand you don't say which tranny you have. If you have the auto and your rig came with the 31" tire package from the factory then you might already have 4.88's

There are several variables. Your best bet is to figure out what gears you have already.

The reason you're not getting favorable answers here is not because people don't want to help. It's because we don't like answering the same questions over and over.

New people are encouraged to read the newbie FAQ before making their first posts to get familiar with what people on here consider acceptable posts.

Newbie type questions (the kinds of questions that have already been asked and answered on here time and time again... such as the one you asked) will usually be better recieved over in the Newbie forum... although in your defense... you did add the Newbie disclaimer at the beginning of your post.

I suggest you first figure out the gearing you have in there, you can read the instructions here if you need help to do that.

Add the details of the truck your driving in your signature so that people know what vehicle you're talking about when you're asking questions, and make your questions more detailed. The more info you give... the better results you'll get.

Any question about gearing depends of the type of transmission you have, ie manual or auto?

Since I just finished answering your other question about transmission solenoids, I now know that your have the A340H auto transmission. It is quite possible that you have 4.88's in there already. Use the link that I posted above to confirm that. In which case, you might want to go to 5.29 if you're looking for a bit more "pep". If you do a lot of highway driving on a highway that has very few hills, expect your gas mileage to go down if you do this. If you do a lot of stop and go driving, or drive on a lot of hills, you might actually see an improvement in mileage, but not likely.

5.29 gears with 31" tires is going to be far too tall of a gear ratio, IMHO.

Stick with 4.88 or 4.56 gears. If you are looking for more wheel spin, you will need to A. swap in a manual trans or B. Figure out a way to lock up thge torque converter when wheeling in 4x4 situations. Even with lower gears, you are not going to gain any wheel spin. It will be lost in torque converter and trans.

Yeah... it would be a bit tall. 33" tires with 5.29 would get you close to stock with his setup... but he doesn't want stock, and if he's now running 4.88 (still to be confirmed), and wants to change the gearing to get better acceleration, his options are pretty much limited to 5.29.

With 5.29 and 31" tires (with the A340H tranny in O/D with the torque converter locked), RPM's will be between 3000 and 3100 (I think) when driving 75 MPH. A bit high, but not too bad in my opinion. That's why I mentionned that if a lot of flat highway driving is done with this setup, gas mileage would go down. 5.29 and a 32" tire would be a better combination.

X2, I had a similar set-up 5.71 and 33's with a 3.0 A340H and it was actually pretty sweet. The stock gearing from the factory (4.88 and 31s) is too high IMHO. The time I had lower gearing than stock was really the only time I was happy with the 3.0 engine power. I could actually pass people on a 2 lane highway LOL. Can someone explain to me why Toyota felt the need to gear the A340H to go 120 mph in OD, but only gave it enough power to go 65 mph into a headwind?

My assertion is that gearing will not greatly affect offroad wheel spin, since it will be lost in the torque converter. If he could find a way to lock that converter, he would have it made.

4.88 with a 5sp, or 5.29 with an auto. You will be happy.

I just want to be able to go when I hit the gas....no more flooring it just to get to optimum speed or crawling....

Yeah... I hear ya... although I don't own my '93 4Runner anymore.

Post up the results when you've checked to see what gearing you have in there now, and we'll go from there.

You probibly have 4.30 or 4.56 gears stock. The factory 4.88's didnt come till 92 I think.

get some 5.29's OR 5.71's. Make sure you go to a good gear guy (google Zuk gear installs).

I guess I should have noted that this is my daily driver too....would 5.71's be decent on the road?

Not with 31" tires, you want at least 33" tires for 5.71s with the A340H.
