Gearing?
Guys,
I have decided to eventually go with a 3.4 with the supercharger. I currently have a 95 4runner with a 3.0 in it. My question is this, I plan to put 35s on my yota and with 35s I would def need some new gearing, now would it be pointless to have the gearing set up now with a 3.0 before i would swap over to a 3.4? I just want to know if gearing is at all related to the engine itself or if having a new engine will do nothing to my gearing? Any info is always appreciated. Coot |

Yes, but I was using stock gearing and stock tire sizes just to give him an example.

What gears do you have now? Which tranny are you going to be using?
A s/c 3.4 should be pretty darn good with either 4.56 or 4.88 that you may have now. Be sure to ask in the 3rd gen forum and on www.ttora.com to see what people are normally using with that motor.

3.0 + 5sp + 4.56 + 35" = decent. i'm running them wiht no problems. its a little slow out of the hole but i can cruse at 80mph and turn 2900RPM. i say do the swap, get the tires, then decide if you need to regear. you might be able to save yourself money if you dont have to.
[hijkack] Toyota_mdt_tech: where in WA are you... your mustang looks familiar i am wondering if i've seen in it any mustang carshows around the tacoma area. my mom is a active member in the Peirce Co. Mustang Club. [/hijack]

Sorry I forgot to add what Im using now. I have the stock 4.10s now for gearing. I was going to put in 4.88s for the 35s. I was wondering this because I was going to lift my truck and possibly do the gearing at the same time to save on some labor vs holding off on doing the gears until later. Then my friend told me that having a supercharged 3.4 would throw off all the gearing and would make the gearing pointless so I wanted to throw this by you guys and see what you thought. Oh yeah, my tranny and such are all stock, if that helps at all?

Probably not. I'm just down the road form you in the capital. That Mustang was purchased brand new by my grandfather for right around $2600. Has always been garaged. It has 46K original miles on it. That paint you see it the same paint it came with, same goes for the complete interior, hubcaps etc. It resides in a mini storage in another town, very secure. Engine is original, never been apart either!

You will want to regear for 35" tires. Yota engines tend to like high revs and I doubt the 3.4 is any different. 4.88 is the tallest I would go for a regear, 5.29 wouldn't be bad either. Its not like you're gonna be installing a diesel of something like that where the power curve is completely different and taller grears would be needed.

will my 1990 V6 pick-up IFS front 3rd member fit in the 84 front end I plan to use on my SAS? Did someone say they put a rear 3rd into the front of a solid axle? How is the easiest and cheapest way to get a high pinion front in my 84 axle?

8" rear goes in solid fr, use the V6 third design if available, stronger 4 pinion design. 7.5" not compatable. Excuse my ignorance, it appears the 8" hi-pin may be a better option, Elocker not direct bolt-in swap, mod req. Not my area of expertise, non 86-95 trucks & 4runners. Feel free to disregard, as repitition, is futile.

Please disregard the entirety of post #13.
http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/ 8" High pinion Elocker is DEFINTELY the way to go if you can find one and afford it. Your IFS parts are not usable in the solid axle. Third members are the same for the rear and front solid axles, you can use either a 4cyl or 6 cyl - the housings have the same bolt pattern etc. Only difference is an extra stiffening rib and larger bearings on the V6. The strength difference is negligible.

If you're doing the engine swap so you can run 110mph down the highway leave the gears alone... However, if you're doing the swap so you'll have better power and acceleration, and still want to have that with the 35's, you need to regear. I think if you're going to keep the 5 speed and go with 35's and a 3.4L w/SC the 4.88's would be a great choice... When I was planning a V8 SBC swap into my truck I was going to keep the 4.10's in it because the V8 would have the power to turn 36's no problems but now that I have decided to keep the 22re in it I bought 5.29's... Gears are not directly tied to the engine but as engine power goes up and down you may want to adjust your gearing accordingly. Plan your gears around the engine you're going to be running but it won't hurt one bit to put the higher gears in early. As a matter of fact, with the 3.0 you'll be glad you have the 4.88's. I would think performance with the 3.0, 4.88's and smaller tires will be about the same as your 3.4 w/SC 4.88's and 35's.
