Gas Mileage '94 toyota p/u 4x4 22re
Hello all!
Last year I purchased a '94 toyota P/u 4x4 w/ 22re w 87k miles. Since I have had it, I have averaged about 15 MPG in the city. I'm not a leadfoot by any means.
I have read posts here of folks that have indicated 20/ 22 MPG with a similair truck. What is not clear to me is if they are 4wd/ or what size tires they run.
I am running 31x10.5 R15's. and I do have 4x4.
Am I getting good mileage? If not what should it be?
I just had the head completely re-done as I had a blown hg about 2 months ago.
What things can have the greatest impact on mileage.? I believe that the truck has the factory exhaust system, I'm considering swapping it. Any advice?
I figure my speedo is off roughly by about 10% or so, but even then it doesnt change my overall mileage.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated , as I am totally new to the toyota p/u experience.
Thanks!!!!

buy a cheap set of wheels with 235's or 225's on them, save the 31's for wheeling. I have a set of 235's on now and I'm getting 40 more miles to the tank, which is certainly more than can be attributed just to speedo calibration.
The swap took me from 19.5mpg to like 22

I ran 31x10.5's for about 2 years and I got about 23-25 on highway, 20-22 in city. I now have 32x11.5's and get 20-22 on highway, 18-20 in city. I have 22re and 4.56 gears, I replaced pcv, plugs(denso's), air and fuel filter, and the cap/rotor. I install 2.25 from manifold back(ditched the cat) and have flowmaster 50 on! I have yet to replace the o2 sensor. I thinks the biggest gains I have in gas mileage were the plugs wires and filters!

Thanks for the quick reply.!!!
I just installed a new O2 sensor (denso), The plugs, wires , cap/rotor are all new.
I am getting a rare cel light. Code I get is 71. The light comes on every 2 weeks or so. This is a daily driver.
Sounds like something is wrong with my truck. any suggestions what else I should look at? Could the EGR light have something to do with it?

I've got 31's on my 93 and I get right about about 20, or 19.5 mpg. Hwy or city doesn't really matter.
I don't have swamper tires or anything, just all terrain things. My engine is a rebuilt with only about 5k miles on it though...but the truck has 215k on it.
I'd say something's wrong only getting 15mpg.
You're right, with 31's, the speedo is about 10% off. If my speedo says 60mph, I'm actually going 65mph. I've calculated my mileage by known distances, not the odometer, and it's consistently at 19-20mpg...which i think sucks, but oh well, lol.
I'd put your tire pressure at at least 35 or 40, if you haven't already.
Other than that...maybe, clean your throttle body, air filter....but all that shouldn't even make your mileage that low...so I dunno.
Code 71 is egr system failure, which will definately screw you up. From doing a quick search, I found that a guy's TPS was out of adjustment and that fixed his code 71.

I would not say there is anything really wrong with you getting 15, unless the truck has very low mileage. The tires may be affecting that, as well as the oil you use, whether or not you have auto hubs, and how much city vs hwy you do.
Auto hubs will suck down mileage, a higher viscosity oil will suck down mileage, the bigger tires too. If you do a whole lot of stop and go, you are goign to get worse. Any number of factors could be affecting it.
For those of you running 31's, are you correcting for the change in tire size?
I correct for mine, both gears and tires, and in the summer i get 25-26 hwy, and 21-23 city. Winter is a bit worse, about 2 mpg worse on average
I have 33x12.5's. engine has less than 10k on it.

Thanks for the replies.
I have manual lockers on the 4x4.
I have not had the engine rebuilt., I'm recovering over the sticker shock of having the head re-worked along with valves, etc. The truck has about 90k miles on it. This is the second head job done on the engine. The guy that sold me the truck failed to tell me that he had also blown the HG on the engine. I only found out because when we took the head off to send to the machine shop, we noticed that it had been worked on.
I do about %70 city 30% highway. Not many highways around here.
I did have to replace the entire injector rail, as 2 of the 4 injectors were bad.
Other than that, I'm going to chase down that cel 71 ghost and see if it yields results.
Any other advise or things to look for would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Code 71 is EGR system failure some where! he is a quote from another forum " The most common failure is the egr modulator, check the small vacuum ports on the throttle body on top they are marked P,R,Q make sure they are not clogged up, clean them out with a small wire and some spray cleaner, if you have a vacuum gauge check for vacuum at these ports with the engine between 1400-1800 rpm, the vacuum should be steady, this is a two stage system so one port will get vacuum at a lower speed the other port will get vacuum at higher rpm.
The temp sensor is located on the egr valve housing, it is almost never the cause." Try this and see!

my truck is ext. cab longbed 4x4 on 31's and im only averaging around 16-17 with 70% interstate style driving and the other 30% stop and go city driving. im having CEL issues and just changed the o2 sensor for the 3rd time and still get a code 21 so im sure it has some affect on my mileage. if youre getting 20 or more id be pretty happy

Wow! Post your truck's specs (oil etc). I'm getting about 20mpg, don't see how you can get 25! I've only got 31" tires, new engine. I don't have synthetic oil yet.

15 is terrible for a mostly stock truck, mine gets around 20 all-around. i'd do a full tune-up and change the O2 sensor as well.
also, when the head gasket was done, was the head resurfaced? if so, it might've thrown the cam timing off, and if they used a thicker gasket to compensate, it makes the engine less efficient as it does away with the quench in the cylinder head....

if your speedometer is off ,then does that also affect the odometer boy truck has 31s on it 22 r 5 speed ,last time we took it to KY it got a touch under 18 ,if the odometer is reading right any info on that thanks, and it has lock outs

Gas Milage is a touchy subject. But most 22re 4WD toyotas get about 13-16 MPG with 31's. If you get some smaller tires like the stock size which is 225/75 then yea you will get about 20mpg. Check your tire pressure make sure its even and above 32 atleast all round. Tune-up? Air filter? 4-5k shifting is not going to get good MPG's either.

my 90 pick up with 22r 5 sp man hubs 4x4 235 tire with 4 inch body lift is geeting abt 12 miles to the gallon.would the valves needind adjusted make it have crappy gas mileage.its also got header no cat flowmaster and k&n cold air intake .ive adjusted them once with feeler gauges with the motor cold might try it with it up to temp.i replaced both front calipers thinking they were hanging up .doing full tune up to night.
