gas mileage?

hey guys I have a 92 4runner 2wd auto with the v6 and 31" pirelli scorpions just had the heads rebuilt. Its a fun truck BUT I have a big problem with it the gas mileage! Does the 3.0 just suck through gas that fast, or is there something I can do to get it up even a little? I'm seeing around 12mpg total and its kind of a killer here in So cal being gas is 4.49 a gallon and shes thirsty. any help? I wouldnt mind changing out for the manual tranny if it werent too much work but no clue how much fab work that would be neccesary. or would the stick even be that beneficial?
thank you guys.

yeah the 3.0 is a gas hog. though it should get around 20 on the highway. since i dont have a 3.0, i cant say for sure. my 22RE gets 21 on the highway. my buddy who put an expedition gas tank on his 3.0 just filled up.. cost him over 100 bucks... he put that on cuz it was goin thru gas too quick. makes sense in a way.

so the bigger gas tank means the truck won't use as much gas?
all I can gather means that a bigger tank means if you keep it full, it won't run out as often.
either way, it's still burning gas at the same rate.

so maybe it makes sense in a way, but every other way, it doesn't make sense.

Here are some MPG numbers:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...ileage-142556/

I don't think a 5SPD will help you much... but at todays gas prices you might find the increased mileage might offset the cost of a swap.

$4.49? Jesus Christ Almighty save us all...It's just at $4.00 here.

Gas has got to go down soon. People are already rioting.

$4.54 and .9 cents is the best i could find today here in so cal.. it's supposed to go up to $5 in a month or so.

12 mpg is pretty bad.. the worst i get when driving only on the street, using regular 87 octane, with a leadfoot is 14mpg (i have a VERY heavy lead foot)... and that is with the 3.0, auto tranny, 4wd, on 31 x 10.5 bfg ats, with stock 4.56 gearing.

when i drive like a grandma on only the street, i get around 16 - 17 mpg... and if i drive only on the highway like a grandma at 65 miles per hour i get 20 - 22 mpg.. with mixed city/highway grandma driving, i average about 18 mpg.

you should be averaging at least 16 mpg. when was your last tune up?.. you should replace you spark plugs, and gap them correctly.. replace your distributor cap and rotor and cables... check your timing.. replace your fuel filter.. feed your engine some mobil 1 synthetic.. and clean or replace your air filter.

..oh, and try to buy gas that doesnt have a lot of ethanol added to it.. if you can find it.

You guys with the $4.50/gal should be happy as ours is at $5.30/gal for gas and $5.18 for diesel right now. It should be going up again shortly. And sorry to say but its not going to go down.

its 4.69 now and i got 228 miles out of my tank and filled up 17 gallons so around 13 mpg mainly highway, just rebuilt the heads with new plugs wires cap and rotor. timing may be off on it and my dads using 20w50 in it to quiet up a tick I guess and she just started throwing code 71 which is the Ca code for EGR and I know it takes 2 times to trip the EGR light so Im going to get the price on a EGR fix that and sell it I dont want to but I drive too far everyday to be dealing with that low of mpgs but dont fret we still have a 88 1/2 ton with a 22r and a 5 speed (yes I have thought about a complete swap)

there's not a whole lot you can do but you get a cold air intake, a throttle body spacer, smaller tires, but not too small because that will take your rev up higher which doesn't help at all. so far the best thing i think you could do would to just drive at 55 if possible. I've got a 90 yota 4x4 and it get somewhere around 21 mpg if i go 65-70. but when i go 55 which i absolutely hate i get up end of 25-26 mpg's. although i really hate going slow. also accelorating slower helps a lot. but so far i get the best gas milage when i leave it in the driveway and ride my bike.

Throttle body spacers are useless. Its the same thing as extending your cold air intake half an inch. They only work on carburetors because fuel is already mixing at that point. The throttle body only controls air.

Smaller tires aren't necessary, just air up your tires to 45psi or so so they're nice and stiff. You'll find a huge difference in mpg just off of that.

And lastly, as much as I would rather drive my truck I will have to agree with leaving it in the driveway in favor of the bike haha. My bike is 41 years old, runs badly, and still gets over 60mpg. I really need to fix her up maybe I can get 80mpg

The door panel ratings are for stock rims and tires.
It's safe to exceed the door panel recommended tire inflation... IF the tire and rim are rated accordingly. So if the tire and rim are rated for say 50 PSI, go ahead and use it.

I have a 93' 22re 4x4 thats getting 25mpg. It's all in how you're driving. Change your driving habits and you'll see a large improvement in mpg's. e.x....take off slow, and look ahead for red lights. You know, simple . It really works if it's yer daily driver. Google hypermiling and you'll see what I'm talkin bout.

Change up your driving style for sure.... Ease into the throttle, you don't need to be the quickest off the line. Now I have a 5spd pickup, so its not quite the same as a automatic 4 runner. But I will get 17mpg if I am heavier on the throttle, and around 19mpg or better when I take it easy. I still go 5 over on most roads, and on the interstate some times 10 over.

249k on the old V6, stock gearing, and 33's. I also run full synthetic Mobil 1 oil, and keep my tires at 35 psi. Your running some heavy oil, dump that and put in some good 5w30 Mobil 1 oil. The engine tick is pretty common, just valve noise which can be adjusted with new valve shims. The tick doesn't seem to bother mine, and I have pushed it past 5k rpms a few times on the trails.
