Gas Gauge Issue

So my gas gauge in my 86 4x4 with a 22R is having an issue, not really a big one, just one of those little things that I let get to me. When I fill it up it reads full and reads what its suppose to up to a half a tank then the needle just drops to empty. Just swapped in an SR5 cluster so I can have all the goodies and it does the same thing. Any ideas?

If you pull the fuel gauge sender out of your tank, the resistor probably looks like this:

Toyota doesn't sell the resistor by itself. You have to buy the whole sending unit from the dealer. Very pricey. I have fixed them by taking the resistor out of another unit and soldering it into the one I'm working on.

If you could find the exact wire this resistor was wound with, you could rewind it. You'd have to get the exact same wire, with the same diameter, composition, ohms per foot. I haven't found a source yet.

I guess that I'll also have to live with this problem. That price is a little steep

Maybe I will hold off on that for a little bit. It would be nice to get it replaced for when I go out of town.
