Fuel Sending Unit compatibility?
I'm building a 1986 LWB 4X4 for my son. This truck spent most of its life deep in Mississippi and has had some very "unique" maintenance done that I'm trying to undo.
It is a SR5 and started life as EFI, but the PO changed it to a carb motor at some point. (I think he used rusty scissors to hack up the wiring harness.)
The gas gauge does not work. I have pulled the fuel sending unit and verified it is faulty. (Rusted solid and then broke on me.) The gas gauge does move when I ground the appropriate wire. (YR, IIRC) I am 99.99% sure this is the original EFI fuel tank.
I would like to start a salvage yard search for a replacement, but can anyone tell me what compatible models I should be looking for?
I tried looking up the OEM part number, but had trouble making heads or tails of it. This is a RN64 truck and I don't know the actual size of the tank. Is there something else I need to determine before beginning my search?

The size and shape of the of the tank
Then the sending unit needs to match your gauge or get the gauge with the sending unit Some combinations used different wound sending units.
Could have been from different vendors as the vehicles were built.
Good Luck Being your a little more down south I never could get a good one from a yard.

is it a standard cab short bed, standard cab long bed, or extended cab short bed? That is the only way to know what tank you have. it goes off of body style and if it's EFI or carb.

It is a RN64 VIN truck. It is a standard cab, long bed, SR5, that originally had EFI.
That's a mouthful!
Thanks!

These are the listings for a 86-88 Toyota SR5 22-re, 5 spd manual or auto, reg cab 4x4.
If your truck had the a 15 gallon (56 liters) tank and did not have a low fuel light the sender part # would be 83320-39665.
You say that your truck is an SR5, so it should have the low fuel light, are there 3 wires on the old sending unit? If so it and it has the 17.5 gallon (65 liters) tank the sending unit should be 83320-39695.
The easiest way to verify is to run your vin # by your local Toyota dealer and see what part # they come up with.

It's been a while since I pulled the sending unit, but I'm pretty sure it had 3 wires. Only one was hooked up though. I grounded it and the gas gauge went to Full.
I'll have to make a stop at the dealer with the VIN number.

The instrument cluster does not have a tach. I'm beginning to wonder if the instrument cluster and the fuel tank were swapped???
Is there any other way to verify what tank this thing has?
You've pulled me through some tough wiring messes so far on this truck and I really appreciate the help!!!

I'm beginning to believe the gas tank was swapped. When I look up replacement tanks, I noticed that the 2wd and 4wd tanks were a little different.
On both tanks, there is an "upper hump" and a "lower level". The 4wd tanks all have both holes on the "upper hump" and the 2wd tanks all have one up top and one on the "lower level".
The tank that is in the truck now has one on the "upper hump" and one on the "lower level" so I'm thinking it is out of a 2wd.
The question is if the fuel sending unit is actually different between these?
I pulled it out the weekend and it only has 2 wires. There are 5 holes for the screws in the top. These holes are on a 2 1/4" circle with the total OD being 3".
