fuel pump question(pics)

Ok, so i need some opinions

I got my bed off to replace it with a cherry one found on Craigslist. My sending unit lines were rusted badly to the point where I literally touched one and I pushed throught the line. So I am ordering a pump assembly bracket, rubber o-ring, screws, sock-filter and pump cushion through Toyota. Total= 210.00 ugh. I have 180,000 on my vehicle, should I replace the pump? Heres the clincher, it's an additional 390.00 for the pump.

Pep-boys has a pump for 130.00......

So what I am wondering is what is the life expectancy of the pump itself. After I replace the bracket assembly, the pump is all that will be original. I replaced the fuel filter last fall.

just wondering how many miles people have on their fuel pumps?

Any experience with the pep-boys or auto-zone pumps?

Any input wouldbe helpful.

I am leaning towards just keeping the old one.

I think the pump in my '85 is original, has close to 280K miles on it and still going strong. I do carry a used pump as a spare.

THat is one hell of a job to do on the trail!!!

I'm impressed!

I guess the toyota product is far superior to the pep boys. Would I be correct in saying the pep boy pump would probably last as long the reaminder of life left on my original toyota?

Pump replacement is a piece of cake on the 1st gen 4Runner. Access hatch under the rear seat, lift that and the pump is right there. Don't have any experience with the PB pump, so no idea there.

I'v heard two sides of the story when replacing a fuel pump.

A.) Leave the tank full due to less fumes.

B.) Drain it so you don't have a time bomb in your face.

Both sound highly combustable, but I'm leanig towards draining.

What do you guys think?

If you're only changing the pump, just disconnect the battery and no sparks can happen... and you don't have to drain / fill / ??? the tank. But the logic behind having a full tank is that it's the vapors that burn since they can mix with oxygen in the atmosphere.

And when you're done, I might suggest a coating like rubberized underbody coating over the pump area to keep road salts and such from corroding the piping.

Made some progress on cleaning up the frame. Used two coats primer 3 coats frame and roll bar spray.

You could put an aftermarket high performance one in for less than $100. It might be a little louder though. I know this isn't listed for our Trucks but it does fit a 95 Runner so it should work for you. Ask Mtgoat I know he uses one in his pickup.

Tough call. Although with how bad the surrounding area was, may be an indication of the pump. I just had a factory pump go out after 18 months, still ran, but wouldn't pump. I'm running a Checker Auto pump right now with no problems. Just remember to not let your tank get below 1/8-1/4 of a tank, the fuel in the tank is was keeps the pump cool.

Checker pump has lifetime? Thats pretty good. Pep boys only has a year.

As far as the high performance, does it affect your gas mileage? This is my DD.

Thanks for the heads up on 1/4 tank thing. I didn't know that, but now that I heard it, it makes perfect sense!

Evil, I'd suggested getting the more expensive pump from Toyota. I bought one a little while back when replacing mine and opted for one that I knew was good. If, like 4crawler suggested, you carry a spare (and can trail change it) Pep boys one should be fine.

I have never ordered anything from them, let us know how it goes, i was thinking of ordering an 02 sensor from them. I prefer to use Denso parts on my truck when possible because they are better quality (in my opinion) than most other parts out there.

I've ordered several things from sparkplugs.com (which is who this Densoproducts.com company really is) over the years, mainly o2 sensors, and had great luck with them, they are a very well established and reputable company.

My '91 has 230K miles and the pump still works fine...but, I realize it's the one thing which could fail 'way out there' without warning and that would be bad. If this pump makes it to 275-300K miles and I plan to keep the truck longer, I'll probably change it out as a preventative.

I thought mine went in teh pickup but it was the wiring (132K). The one on my LS is getting weak if I run too hard too long she cut's out a bit. I know the PSI is a bit low, I'd check the PSI and go from there. If its where is should be I think you'd be alright in keeping it. I'm taking the LS to Myrtle Beach this week (about 1400 round trip) and I don't think it'll give me an issue. I'm going to change it out in a few months. I don't put the miles on her that I used to.

Trail fix on a 1 st gen 4runner pieco o cake. On a pick up PITA. I started to get ready to drop the tank on my white one then saw the hatch from underneath and got her done in a jiffy.

I have replaced the fuel pump on both of my EFI 4runners only once. Both times used the local parts store brand. Kragen, Autozone. Both times it was after the truck sat for a few months without running.
