fuel pump issue??

yesterday i went get a few items at the local dive lol and whan i came back out to start the old girl it acted like it was out of fuel. gauge still reading a little below 1/4 .....however ive never run it that low b4... so i figured i was out of gas ...luckily there was a gas station nearby and the dude helped me push the old girl to the pump. so i put 10 bux of fuel in her. still wont start...WTF!!! so rather then run the battery down i decide to ty and jump it in second gear. it fires right up instantly!! so i was thinking maybe the fuel pump sock is either clogged or has fallen off. any thoughts? ive has some issues with hard starting when warm ever since ive had this truck. im thinking i should drop the tank and have alook see...bad as i hate too

be very careful that you don't break the "bend" in the fuel line from the fuel bracket, typical area that gets weak over time.

If you're in a collision that breaks a fuel line, do you want the pump to keep running? The system is designed to shut off the pump as soon as the engine stops sucking air. What 4Crawler suggests is a diagnostic method; once you find out what's wrong, fix it!

?????????????

From your comments on your first post...

so rather then run the battery down i decide to ty and jump it in second gear. it fires right up instantly!!
You didn't say that you jumpered the fuel pump check connector to bypass the COR and AFM...just that you jumped started your truck in second gear. If I'm reading this right you were asking a question about jump starting your truck...jump startiung your truck won't hurt it a bit...it's just a real PITA!

I put a jumper in after i replaced my fuel pump and my circuit opening relay, without the jumper my trucks fuel pump wouldn't turn on. I drove it with the jumper in the diagnoses box for just under 2000 miles and it seems as if it burn my fuel pump out. I have heard from an somewhat unrelyable source that the jumper (B+ to FP) provides to much power and thats the reason it burn out, is this true? and what else could i replace so I dont need the jumper??

Depends on what year truck you have. On the earlier trucks, the jumper only turns on the CO relay, so no different w/ or w/o the jumper. Later model trucks the jumper bypasses the CO relay contacts, so you might see a few tenths of a volt more to the pump unless there is some voltage reduction circuit in the CO relay (which I don't think there is):

Fix is to figure out why your CO relay is not turning on and fix that:

Likely reason for "burning the pump out" is if you ever had run low on gas. Pump uses fuel for cooling/lubrication and if you run out of gas, pump will run dry and that is the end of the pump if it keeps running. I ran w/ a jumper on my truck for a few years before my CO relay magically started working again.

Jumping the fuel pump if for testing not driving.

It is extremely foolish to drive on a jumped pump.

track down the real problem. it takes work working out gremlins.
keep reading and searching here. it helps to find a factory service manual and use it. try a search for your year on google like "88toyota servicemanual.pdf"

Yes, it's true. That was a VERY unreliable source.

The COR (Circuit Opening Relay) is just a relay; when the contacts close it's just like using a jumper (except your POS jumper wire probably doesn't provide as direct a path as the factory-wired COR). So you have a problem in your COR or in the VAF (which drives the COR). You'll need a multimeter to track it down, then you'll be good to go.

Remember that the fuel pump is wired that way for one reason: to SAVE YOUR LIFE. (Actually, there are some gasoline-burn victims who claim that being dead would be a substantial improvement. Of course they were alive when they said that, so who do you believe?) Don't be a dummy; get it fixed.

ok so i buy a new fuel pump and walkout to my truck and turn the key just to see what happens and bang fuel pump kicks on and truck runs, could this be because it was about 30 degrees out when it failed? or what else could cause this?

Likely the Circuit Opening relay or the ignition switch:
