Fuel Pump Electrical Issues
Okay...so I really just want to start my truck. I just finished my rebuild on a truck that I bought that has never ran since I've seen it. I found out my fuel pump was bad so I replaced it. Sad part is now it doesn't sound like it is kicking on when I try to start it and I'm still not getting fuel to the rail. When I just terminals Fp and +B I can hear the fuel pump kick on. What should my next course of action be? I tried to find a picture of the fuse box in the engine compartment and it says the top left fuse is the fuel fuse. But it seem I am missing that spot all together....there's not anywhere to even plug in a fuse there.
What other fuses might it be? I am just lost right now...if I try to jump those terminals while I crank it over, should it start?

are you getting fuel to the rail? How long have you been crankng it? might take a while for the lines to get fuel enough in them to start the truck. Do you have spark? Start running through the basics to track down your problem. Spark fuel air basic things and then go towards what ever direction it points you in. Crack the fuel line close to the rail to see if you're getting fuel to the rail.

Ok, so you jump the terminals and you hear the fuel pump run, so lets start at the tank, there is fuel in the tank right ?. Have you replaced the fuel filter ?. with the test terminals jumped and the fuel pump running loosen the fuel line bolt at the cold start injector and see if fuel sprays out, lets us know what you find.

I have about a gallon in the tank. I can put more just to be sure it is picking up fuel. I have a new fuel filter. I cranked it for 20 or 30 seconds. I will check the cold start valve tomorrow to make sure I am getting fuel. Would a little starting fluid help to prime the system? Do I need to maybe just crank it longer?

A gallon of gas will barley cover the bottom of the tank, that`s just not enough. I would add another 3-4 gallons of gas at least. If you just turn the key on you won`t hear the fuel pump come on, but once you start cranking the engine over it trips the circuit in the air flow meter to turn the fuel pump on.

okay I have a good 4 gallons in there now. Before it sounded like it was sucking air so I think you were right. Now when I jump the terminals it sounds like it is sucking gas. I didn't have time to check the cold start for gas or any fuses but I did crank it over a few times and I still didn't get anything. Maybe at lunch I can give it a shot...

I checked the EFI fuse and it is good. I unscrewed the cold start banjo bolt a little and gas came spewing out so I know I am getting gas to the rail. I pulled a spark plug and it had ZERO gas on it. What could cause the injectors to not open up? When I pulled the injectors during my build there wasn't any build up and I cleaned them really well with carb cleaner. Ideas?

Did you reconnect all of the wiring after your rebuild? There is a grounding point for the engine harness on the lower side of the intake manifold, E1 and Eo1 are connected to ground at this point and these are the ground wires for the ECU. The ECU fires the injectors by completing the circuit to ground. If E1 and Eo1 don't have a good ground connection, your injectors will not fire, and the remaining EFI components will not function properly either. That would also explain why jumpering the fuel pump is the only way that you can get it to work.

I'll double check that ground...I made sure I had all the ground taken care of but maybe it isn't getting a solid contact or something. I'll try undoing the bolt and scuffing up the area a bit.

I roughed up the grounding area and still no luck there. I sprayed starting fluid and it started up a little and then backfired down the intake tube (i'm thinking because of left over starting fluid). I checked the resistivity of each injector and they are good. I checked the resistivity of all the ports on the MAF and they all checked out to spec. What's the next line of troubleshooting? I was going to check the resistance levels on the ECU to see if they are good.

Funny story, two seconds after I typed this I went down to see if I had any engine codes so I had to try to start it again and fired right up! I had it running for a solid minute! Now, the only problem is I have the number one fuel injector spewing gas out where the gasket meets the fuel rail. Do you guys think it is just not on there straight or something?

Yep, that's what it was. I guess the oring got pinched and then tore when I was installing the number one injector. Replaced it and everything looks like it is holding. I started the truck up and ran it for 20 minutes or so and everything is good.
