After removing the injectors, I was looking at replacing the fuel filter. It looks difficult/impossible from the top. Is it easy/easier from the side via the wheel well? Maybe a combination of top (for the front fuel line nut) and side access (for all the rest)?

Why did they put it in such an inaccessible location?!?!?!

take the wheel off, work from the side its not that hard

Remove the lines put new filter on inner fender or cable tie to the Ac hose.

Next time you remove the starter remove the old filter.

I find it easier to get the lines from the top 17mm line wrench.

Don`t drop and lose the new crush washers Like I do.

The reason they put it there is because it is not a maintanence item. There is no fuel filter replacement schedule in toyotas maintanance program.

The reason for this is that Toyotas fuel filters are lifetime filters. I probably would replace a 25 year old filter with another Toyota one and never touch it again...unless I was putting mud in the fuel tank!

@jeets- mine clogged up and caused my truck not to run. toyota may say that but it still needs to be replaced occasionally.

Makes sense and kind of what I suspected. I think since I have no problems with it, and it's reasonably accessible from the side, I'm going to omit it from my injector project.

my 92 has an "access cover" or whatever you wanna call it on the inside of the fender, and i think it was the longest wobble extension in my harbor freight kit i used for the filter removal. not sure i even took the wheel off

cake and pie. as previously stated though, use an oem filter. i didn't and runs great, but the question is always, "would it be better and more trouble free with oem?" yes

I never said it never needs replacing(in actuality)..I just explained why Toyota put it there. And if you run clean fuel than a Toyota filter should last you for years and years...

Hey john4wd, nice job on relocating the fuel filter. Are the stock lines long enough to reach to that spot on the inner fender?

Yeah, the 1st gen and 2nd gen 4Runners have the removable plate as well on the passenger side. I think I left the tire on...but would of been easier without it there. WOW, why didn't I think of that???? I guess I enjoyed stuffing my head under the fender with the tire on...
