fuel filter: how long does it take to change it?

First off, is it really important that I change my fuel filter? Truck has 120k on it. Service records don't indicate it was ever done.

I've searched around, and know that changing the fuel filter on a 22re is a huge PITA. So for those of you who have done it, about how long would it take two guys who have never done it before?

Just spoke to my mechanic, and he said he would charge $100 to do it. So, I'd really like to save myself some $$ and just do it myself.

about 3 hours... if you do it like I did and remove the intake manifold, lol, but I had other reasons of removing that, so the FF was just right there so I did it...

but seriously, changing the FF itself isn't hard at all, I mean it's 2 bolts that hold it to the block, and a bolt on either side of the filter for the banjo-fittings on the lines; it's getting to it is what is a PITA. About the only thing you can do to make it easier is to take off that little black plate with the 4 bolts on it that's in the wheel-well... or maybe hire some 4-year-old with some skinny arms to reach in there and do it...

I'd change it. Fuel is dirty shiot.

I can do it in under an hour taking my time. You should be able to in an atleast an hour without the need for an extra person.

I like to pull the pass side tire off to get to the filter making it a much nicer experience. Do whatever you want, just don't forget there's service panel under the fender with 4 10mm bolts.

Ok so i just did this on mine like 2 days ago. its not really that hard to get it out and replace it its just a little difficult to get it back in...

anyways you'll go to the passenger fender well and take out a little removable piece there's 4 bolts. after you do that you can see the filter pretty clearly, there's 2 bolts holding it in and you can get to the bottom bolt easily so pull that one, then the top bolt you'll need a swivel head extension because the intake manifold is kinda blocking it. you'll be able to get that bolt out too. then you take off your fuel lines and bolt the new filter in there. and try to get the filter back into place so you can bolt it in there. one thing i had to do tho was leave the line closest to the front of the truck off so that it was easier to move around. but that's about it just make sure you get it bolted down. if you have any questions just ask.

im doing mine soon as the rian lets up// removing the starter just a few bolts is gonna make it alot easyier.. i pulled the starter last night and i can touch and feel the filter.. ill let you know how it goes.. im going to be doing this on 2 trucks

cool. sounds like I'll go ahead and do it myself once I have some time.

What's the best way to depressurize the system? Isn't it something like, remove the starter fuse and then try to start it a couple times?

just take the gas cap off and jump the fuel pump in your diagnose port...

if it wasnt raining id would do mine ...weather man sez more rain for all weekend too

HELP I CANT GET MY 12mm scket or wrench on the top bolt.. i have all the other bolts cracked and this one is seriously pissing me off!!!

WHAT TOOL DO I NEED BEFORE GO CRAZY AND USE A HAMMER TO GET IT OFF

jump the fuel pump with cap off to release pressure in line?? am i off base?

Jumping the FP terminals causes the fuel pump to run and build pressure in the line. Removing the cap is what you want to to do, though.


Why can you not get a 12mm socket on the top bolt? Not enough room? Do you have any wobbly extensions?

yeah but there isnt enough room to fit socket and ratchet on the back its not deep enough and im using shallow socket

i can it a thrust bath and will try anfer the ball game.. see if i have any different tools in my bag!

ok ill try again.
the top bolt on the fuel filter, there is only a inch between that and another part so if i fit a socket on it i have about 1/8s of a inch and i cant connect my ratchet.. so if i try the socket connected to rachet i cant turn it onto the bolt because no room.. my 12mm wrench isnt very long and i cant get any leverage on it... i cant get at this bolt from the top i tried.. the starter is out of the truck.

I just changed the fuel filter on my 86 4Runner yesterday, it took less than 30 minutes to do, and it was the first time ever doing one, so its not that hard at all.
