Front suspension as stiff as a board.

I bought a 1995 toyota pickup front my fathers coworker and an am trying to get all the bugs out. The front suspension is stiff. It really does not move. Even when you jack it up by the front suspension arm. I unbolted one of the shocks from the top and it moves but does not push back so it is shot. The front shocks are rancho rs5145 and stabilizer is rs5402. The truck is slightly lifted and has been so since it had 25,000 miles on it when my fathers coworker bought it.

I know the torsion bars are cranked but I do not know how much. How do I figure that out? What else could make the front end so stiff? The truck was sitting for awhile before I got it. Thanks.

It sounds like the bars are tight. Take off the jam nut and start taking out some of that pre-load on the bars. Its possible he put in some thick bars, so you have to measure the diameter. Stock is 22mm, mine are 23.4mm after that the ride goes away unles you have some heavy stuff hanging off the front bumper.

Rancho shocks are no longer my favorite, they seem to fail like that way too early for my taste. I would try a different brand.

Suspension

If I loosen the bars up am I going to knock my alignment off and ruin my tires? I noticed the passenger side bolt is on tighter than the drivers side. Co-incodently the passengerside is stiffer. Are both sides supposed to be even?

yes, yes, read here. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/torsion_bars/
buy a new set of adjusters and go from there. (even if you don't use the new ones) trust me you'll be happy if put new ones in as they are prone to snap if they haven't been messed with in some time.
